Travelling toys - Discussion thread

Okay so now we've got a subforum for toy travellers (hooray :D) and here's the place to discuss about the projects and maybe share interesting stories while you're hosting a toy traveler :) and promote your toy traveler too

I was hosting Geheimnis' Frida (forum thread, travel log) end of last year and it was so much fun :D

Currently I am hosting aliah's Yul-goon and BunTraveler's HoppyVanderHare :) they are from ToyVoyagers and don't have threads in this forum but both aliah and BunTraveler are Postcrossers anyway ;)

Maybe end of this year I'll have more time to host more toy travelers! (I hope to get a new camera too yay)

Right now I'm hosting Kiwi from New Zealand. So far it's fun.
I think this one will be a success and arrive home safely .
The owner nilla_nz, is keeping a close watch and is very organized.
So many toys, notebooks , gift swaps don't work out because the members who start them don't follow up . I think it's a good idea to always check if the next person to receive an item is still active before mailing it on and have regular updates.

I've had 2 guests so far: Burro the donkey and Crizle's Kanga, and I'm waiting for Marcha's Frankie. I think a trvelling toy really needs a lot of organization, but it's a lot of fun too! :)

Travelling toys are toys that travel.

For example I have this little soft cat toy I call Ms Mini Meow. I sent her to her first host (anyone wanting to host can contact me, my first "announcement" was in my signature) and she showed her around: taking photos where I could see Mini - basically "tourist" photos. The host also writes a journal and send the text along with the photos to me and I upload them on Mini's blog (I use a Finnish blog). Anyone can look at the blog to see where Mini has been and maybe get inspired to host her. And the hosts can enjoy the rest of Mini's trip too.

I asked the hosts to send me card(s) on Mini's behalf, like people usually do when they go travelling. Someone might send me a souvenir from the travel too, but that's not my requirement (though it will be higly appreciated and "paid back" ;) ).

Basically travelling toy is a guest you host like you would host a human friend.

When a host is done hosting they send Mini to the next host. Time spent with one host is up to me and the host, some people show her the local area in a week or two and some take Mini with them on their holiday journeys and spend a month with her. Both ways are fine with me and highly appreciated.

I'll send each host a thank you card after the hosting (and when I've received photos and journal). Maybe even something extra...

Some people have different "requirements" concerning the hosting - they might have a paper journal travelling with the toy or they might have a "passport" for the toy (and you go to the local post office to get a stamp on it) or they might have "things to do if possible" list for the toy (maybe the toy wants to see specific places or people)...

The ToyVoyager site is for travelling toys but you don't have to use it (blog) if you don't want to.

I think this is a fun way to see the world! Seeing Mini's photos (which I don't all upload but make a photo album for her) is like I was travelling :) And hosting is fun too! You get to see your local area from a different angle :)

This is how I see it, maybe someone thinks differently or wants to add something... :)

I was supposed to host Kiwi too, but maybe I was a bit impatient :P I could wait but if someone holds a toy traveler (Kiwi or others) for ages without doing nothing, it doesn't seem worth waiting.

ToyVoyagers.com is great because every host can update the travel log by themselves without having to send pictures or stories to the owner/starter to update the blog. Plus they keep track the journey by google map (the feature is fun :)). They charges a bit for the registration tag but what I've heard from aliah lately they're giving away free tags too. I'll drag aliah here to explain more (p.s. she has 5 toyvoyagers to date, how crazy she is?? :P)

Also, the ToyVoyagers (b)log is not the only one you can update yourself... The owner of the toy can set up one practically anywhere, and just send you the access data once the toy visits you... That's what Szandra's done for Tobi, and now that he's with me, I can update his blog myself, add pictures and so on.

cool, a forum just for the toys.

Kiwi has been travelling now for a year and Im sooooo pleased he is still safe and in contact.

I sure didnt expect him to take so long, but the one thing I noticed when i hosted both Mila( Bonktwaggas) and Delila (letjes), is that it is surprising how fast the time flies.
I tried to make sure I took them places of interest around here and get the photos and stories away, but having hosted the two toys myself made me aware that the hosts real life, job, family, commitments etc will impede in the ability to keep things to a 2/3 week stay.

I'd rather he stay a month if that is what it takes for the hosts to also not feel pressured and rushed :)

Imajica, youre still welcome to host kiwi if and when he gets through Canada/ America. Most likely next year lol :D

I'm really excited everytime my voyagers is visiting a new place. It seems like I'm there too. haha :D

I'm hosting Cassiopeia & Blaze right now. They are from ToyVoyagers too :) It's so convenient at ToyVoyagers as the host her/himself can update the travelog so the word and mood better much expressed. I better it that way :)

thanks imajica for organizing a separate thread for all the little travellers!

I would like to encourage anyone who want to start a travelling toy to join ToyVoyagers. ToyVoyagers is a website dedicated to toys and their travels.

You can now create a ToyVoyager without having to buy a Travel Tag!

Finally I see a site here, where I find all traveling toys from postcrossing. I heard so much about it.
I'm owner of six toyvoyagers and active member at toyvoyagers.com and my name there is "fam-united". Maybe you want to see my toyvoyagers, so I will write a link here. One of mine is Cassiopeia, just staying with Aliah in Malaysia.

New hosts and toyvoyagers on www.toyvoyagers.com are always welcome. Our own toyvoyagers are:

Toyvoyager Aaron

Toyvoyager Cassiopeia

Toyvoyager Kari

Toyvoyager Robby

Toyvoyager Sabrina doll

Toyvoyager Robinson

I've finally had the free time to sit and update everything on here.
Life just gets too rushed at times doesnt it?!

Do others with toys travelling worry big time like I do when adding people to the travel host list? What sort of reasons do you, if you do, exclude someone from having your toy sent to them?

I've removed a few simply because they are no longer active on the forum and some have asked to be removed due to changes in their own circumstances.

I dont think you can exclude someone because they are new to the forum. When Kiwi first started he was sent to a few very new people and they looked after him just fine :)

I have been so fortunate that Kiwi has been kept safe by all his hosts so far and part of me is amazed he is still travelling after a year.

Travelling toys travel rate just similar to travelling notebook. It takes time to get to you and need your attention when it's arrived. For me, I think it's easier to start one that host one (unless the starter need to update the blog him/herself). I would be sad if anyone keep the 'little traveler' for him/herself as what happen to Felix I.

Sure it's pointless to send a toy to someone who's not around in the forum anymore. Nobody wants the project get stuck in the middle, so it's always good to check if the next host is available and still willing to host.

@aliah: yep, that was really sad what happened to Felix I. Although it's almost a year ago my kids often think about him and they still say that they'll go to France and bring Felix back home ;)

I always check the next host before Felix is sent again and see if she/he is still interested. That way I think the main risk is that he gets lost on his way from one person to the other but fortunately most parcels arrive. Thank you, postal service ;) And a BIG "Thank you" to all the reliable people who have hosted him so far. You all did a GREAT job!!!

Wow Christina! It seems like you're hosting 5 voyagers at one time. I'm really impressed. I can't manage it if it's more than 2. It'd be too handful for me :o

I had my little froggie Delilah, she already visited New Zealand, Australia and Finland. When visiting The Netherlands for de 2nd time, her host dissapeared. And so did Delilah. I never heard anything again. I have been thinking about starting a new journey with another froggie, but I still doubt. A bit scared if she would dissapear again. I have hosted Kiwi, Kanga and Eagle, and it is so much fun having the toys around :) I also hope to welcome Hippity and Hope in the nearby future :)

@aliah: Yep, I really had 5 at a time but it was too much. But since 2 of them were expected much earlier than they really arrived it became a bit crowded. At the moment I just have Paz and Cute Knut with me and they are about to leave, too, so it's rather quiet. And I'm at my parents' in the countryside at the moment which is nice, but there is of course much more to see in Vienna.
