Q & A

Q : What is FSC ?

FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. It is an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promot the responsible management of the world’s forests.

To know about FSC, please visit : http://www.fsc.org/about-fsc.html
To know about FSC certified forests, please visit : http://www.fsc.org/pc.html
The overview of FSC in Green Wiki : http://green.wikia.com/wiki/FSC

Q : What is FSC certified postcards?

Postcards with FSC certified are made of Mixed Sources of recycled and additional fresh fibre from sustainable forests. Those forests are certified by FSC as well.

For example, the one I received with the following mark on the back side of postcard :

Q : Why should we buy FSC certified postcards ?

To prevent from being a part of the exploiters of unsustainable forests! Let forests live in a reasonable way!

Q : I can't find a FSC certifed postcard in a shop. What can I do?

All we can do is :
Show the producers and shops that there is demand! Ask them for products with FSC certified.

The effect may be very samll, but we never get the harvest unless we try. Union is strength!!
Try to ask one more question before you buy the postcards next time!

I received a postcard with FSC certification mark on it! It surprises me a lot. After collectiong about 450 postcards from 58 countries, I just receive one. I used to think that there is no such kind of postcard in the world. I'm happy that I'm wrong.

These are the card I received from an 11-year-old boy with official ID NL-83713 and the FSC mark on the back side:

I got another card produced by BOOMERANG earlier than this one, but there is no FSC certification on it.

I used to write an e-mail to FSC asking that if FSC certifed paper-products are easy to find, and what kind of sources that most paper made of in the markets. Here is one of the paragraph about the present status :

Quote:
As far as I know, a lot of paper is still made from fresh tree fibre from unsustainable sources. There is a growing range of paper products made from recycled paper or FSC certified mixed sources paper(recycled and additional fresh fibre from sustainable forests) and it is a very good idea to ask at the shops for those products! I fear that especially FSC certified postcards are not yet very widely available, but all the more important to show the producers and shops that there is demand. FSC certified copy paper should be somewhat easier to find.

Some ideas in the first post are from this paragraph!

I've just looked through my cards and found 2 with the FSC mark.

They're both Boomerang cards from the Netherlands. I have more of them, I can have a look later, if they have that mark, too. :)

P.S.: Wasn't there a lottery about FSC cards lately? Have I missed it? :( That card looked wonderful.

It seems that this is the only publisher that publish FSC certifed postcards so far! Please post on this thread if you find more!
By the way, when did you receive those cards? I'm wondering how long ago they start to publish cards like this.

This may mean that they begin to publish FSC certified postcards recently.

*************************************************************************************************************************

Several days ago I wrote an e-mail to a local postcard publishers MIIN asking if they are considering to produce their postcards with FSC certified papers in the future. I got a prospective reply. They said that recently they just got some samples of recycled papers from the paper-supplier, and think of producing their new products (and even part of present products) with recycled papers and environment-friendly printing ink. They also indicate that they will think more and deeper on this topic they are going to put into practice (maybe try FSC certified papers!?), and believe that their green message will spread out to the rest of the world even they are just a small company.

I will try to write e-mails to other local postcard publishers and see how they react! ;)
This is a good start I think, though I don't expect to get more prospective replies.

I just bought a bunch from Whistler BC (where the 2010 winter olympics will be held) and it seems all the Licensed Vancouver 2010 Olympic cards I bought have that symbol.

The cards I bought were from Natural Color Productions

Inspired by this thread...

I sent an email a couple of days ago to the company from whom I buy most of my postcards, and got this message back this evening. Perhaps if the company gets flooded with people asking for FSC, they'll be able to go ahead with it *hint hint*

Dear XXXXX:

Thank you so much for writing to us, and for your support of our products. We greatly appreciate hearing from our customers.

Coincidentally, I just came back from a book publishing conference where I attended a workshop on Eco friendly publishing practices including a lengthy discussion about FSC certification. There are some drawbacks to using FSC certified paper, mainly cost and availability, but Pomegranate cares deeply about being ecologically sound so we are investigating all the various options we have for using recycled paper, FSC certified paper, and vegetable based inks in our production. Some papers are not suitable for the high quality four-color printing that we rely on to achieve such great reproductions but we (and the paper making industry) are making strides every year. Thanks so much for your suggestion. I will make sure Pomegranate’s president and publisher are aware of your concern and recommendations.

All best from Pomegranate,

Sincerely,

Lory Ann Osterhuber

Thank you! KaeEhm!

That sounds inspiring!! :)
It's great to know that they are thinking of this and trying to put it into reality!

I'm thinking that I need to make another list about publishers that consider about this part of their future products (prospective reply) or intend for publishing postcards with FSC certification, so that we can keep eyes on them and expect that one day they will finally UPGRADE to the FSC certified list!

P.S. I also add everyone's post as a reference to the list, so that people can easily find informations without reading through all thread.
