BTW, ALB4, if you go to St Andrew's, the Edinburgh Woollen Mill in the town centre has a marvellous selection of Whiteholme postcards at reasonable
prices. I was there in October. These postcards are of the 'continental' size, 6" X 4" (15cm X 10 cm), which were hard to find in most of the other
places I visited in central Scotland. The others are 7" X 5" and considerably more expensive. |
As much as I wouldn't mind, the last time I was north of the border was Oct 2007 as I'm afraid St Andrew's is a tad away. I actually do live in the
same county as you. |
The country flag confused me! U2U coming! |

York is one of those places where you will be spoilt for choice! There are plenty of shops in the city centre selling postcards, particularly in and
near The Shambles. Have a look (try an internet search) and see if there is a branch of 'The Works' - some branches sell postcards at bargain prices.
The Jorvik Centre is a fantastic museum and has a range of postcards. Also the Minster will have a gift shop. Clifford's Tower (a little castle on a
hill) will have a small selection, and there's the main museum almost opposite, if I remember rightly. Then of course there's the National Railway
Museum! Take plenty of money! Oh, and if you get the chance you MUST go on a ghost walk! Terrific fun! |

My local post office, WHSmith, Clinton etc etc have never stocked postcards. |
I was in Nottinghamshire less than two weeks ago. I didn't go to many places, but I bought loads of city postcards at The Works and at the Tourist
Information Centre in Nottingham itself; I also went to the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre in Edwinstowe, which has a small selection of forest cards.
And to Newark, where the Tourist Information Centre and St Mary Magdalene Church had the best selections; actually I was a bit disappointed in the
cards available in Newark, but perhaps this was owing to the time of year. |

If you are in London, I highly recommend the stands around Piccadilly Circus - some postcards were as cheap as 20p and they're exactly the same as
the ones I've been buying at WH Smiths and Clintons! Also, there's a small arts and crafts market outside St James's church @ Piccadilly where I found
lots of different London cards and "old style" ad cards at very reasonable prices (open Wed-Sat, 11 AM - 6 PM).

I wee while ago I had to deliver to a number of places in & around Parliament & when on a lunch break I went into a shop, in Whitehall, &
the postcards sold were 10 postcards for £1. In addition, they sold differently cut postcards & those were 3 for £1.50. I was happily shocked at
the cheap prices in the centre of London. |

I found some wonderful cards in Edinburgh and in York. I found out that I should search for a bit. At the first stand it was 2 for a pound, later we
found 8 for a pound.
I really like the UK, when it's about cards. So many card stores with birthday-, birth-, holiday-, etc- cards for such a cheap price. And I like the
prices at the postoffice too. I also send some letters out of York, the stamps were cheaper there then at home |

I went to London in half-term week and loads of the little tourist shops along Oxford street sell cards for 10 or even 12 for a £1.
also a lovely stall near Waterstones in Piccadilly, with a huge selection.

If you can't find shops in Cambridge that sells postcards, then you're as blind as a bat.
Joking aside, there is a newsagents on Trumpington St (it's near the junction of Trumpington St & Lensfield Rd) & their selling postcards
where the pix is a selection of Royal Mail stamps. One selection is drawn people in Military Uniforms, another selection showing 007 films, others
with Carry On films, etc.
I've sent one of them to a Postcrosser but that was a private swap (the lady also collects stamps so this postcard matched her likes & I collect
postcards where the pix is the flag of countries so she sent me an old Star-Spangled Banner, which was a great postcard) & therefore I can't give
a web link to it but if you do want to see one of them, one of them is shown on my web site & a link to that is:

Last week I was in Colchester. It's getting difficult to find decent postcards there. The Works is not selling postcards now. The Tourist Information
Centre has a few Salmon multiviews, but now favours locally produced cards, which are poor pictures (in my opinion) and I think I paid 30p each for my
cards there. I found a card shop further along, opposite Culver Street East (I'm not sure of the location) where they still had a few Salmons of the
Castle and some multiviews. |

I buy most of my cards from Tourist Information, the ladies who work there always ask me if the people I sent the cards to liked them I usually go in twice sometimes three times a week and spend about £5
each time, before they knew about Postcrossing and trades it ever so slightly freaked them out, eventually they asked us what we were up to as it
wasn't only me but also my boyfriend (hiraeth) buying lots of cards. Clintons and Smiths have some good map cards but our Works here in Aberystwyth
hasn't sold postcards for a few years now Waterstones has a few of
the Origins cards but they are more expensive. I like to buy different cards other than the general toursity views from the Ceredigion Museum and also
the shop at the National Library of Wales has an excellent range of cards, most of which are vintage but in new condition and only for 20p |

I was in The Works in Ipswich yesterday. I have a feeling they will not be selling any more postcards after their current stocks run out. They have
very few left, some of them are poor quality and others are curling. But maybe when summer comes they will have new cards - we can hope!
BTW, I contacted J Salmon about obtaining postcards direct from them. There is a minimum order of 100 cards per serial number and they cost £18 for
100, i.e. 18p each, plus £2 postage. Cards at The Works are 50p for 4, i.e. 12.5p each, so at the moment it is cheaper to buy them in Ipswich. Today I
was in Woodbridge where a newsagent in the town centre was selling them at 15p each, a good selection too of Woodbridge, Framlingham, Orford, Ipswich
amd Suffolk cards. W H Smith nearby was selling cards at 20p each, but they were in the shop window behind some racks so I couldn't reach many. |

I was in Peterborough today & WH Smiths had mainly the cathedral postcards for 20p each but The Works were selling at 15p & not all were
cathedral postcards.
On my way to that part of Anglia I popped into the Anglo-Saxon Village at West Stow & those were sold at 25p. |

Here is my list for UK, I hope that I can share some new information
Largs, Scotland: Best place is small tourist-shop next to Ferryterminal. They have several nice cards and if I remember right, small ones were 5 for
£1 and big ones ( with few really good lighthouses) were 3 for £2
Greenock, Scotland: Unfortunately only places at the moment are WHSmith with small selection ( 30p) and Waterfront LeisureCentre with nice panoramas
(50p)
Glasgow: So far best place is WHSmith next St. Enoch-centre
London, UK: I have to mentione one really cheap place, small news agent-kiosk front of Russel Square underground. ( 12 for £1)
Nottingham, UK: Lace-center next to castle, castle gift-shop, Museum on Justice and Paperchase |

I went to the Works in Ipswich today, to replenish my stock, and could only get a few of what I needed .
I spoke to the cashier and she said they are expecting a delivery in soon for the 'Summer Season'..
so we will have to wait and see.
I'll let you know toucans if they come in soon |

Thanks, Margaret! Meanwhile, W H Smith in Felixstowe have brought out their postcards again, almost all are multiviews of Suffolk, but they cost 20p
each and there are plenty of them! BTW, Bent Hill Post Office in Felixstowe has a selection of owl cards, a few horses too, if you're interested? |

I do know this is a bit political but it's a shame that WH Smith's don't pass on the 2.5% cut on VAT whereas other smaller firms do albeit only a
saving of a penny.
Toucans & W105akaMoke, e-mail coming your way about 16th May. |

Clintons did pass on the VAT cut for about a week and then it went back up But I agree that smaller places do pass on the saving which helps. |

Margaret - sure, it will be a pleasure. I collect touristy cards, from all over the world; modern only, preferably with a serial number if there is
one. UK preferences are for those published by Salmon, Judges, Hinde, English Heritage and similar, but these are not available in all areas.
Today I was in Felixstowe Tourist Information Centre. For the first time I can recall, they actually have a decent selection of cards - Salmons,
mainly multiviews of Felixstowe and Suffolk, a few from Ipswich. They cost 20p. They are in a rack of other Felixstowe cards which are rather poorly
printed but include a port picture and, if I remember rightly, Felixstowe is misspelt! |
