religious propaganda?

It is a very delicate thing, but I would like to know this. Is religious propaganda allowed on official Postcrossing profiles? I found out by accident a profile in which a person is talking about how great a religious figure is and ... well you can find out yourself: user profile Please don't get me wrong, I am not against any religion, I respect religious freedom. I just would like to know if this is allowed here on Postcrossing.

Hm, I think that profile would be OK if it didn't have the two or three sentences about "you". I suppose it's fine to talk about what that person thinks about Jesus, or whoever, but this sort of comes out as trying to convince people of it, with all the "Jesus loves you" and so on... I have no problem with religious people, but maybe this person should be reminded to take out the "you" parts.

I agree with Mickaela. Parts of it feel very preachy, as if she's trying to convince us to convert.

Such highly visible, public expressions of religious conviction are quite prevalent here in the United States, but it's inappropriate on a site like this.

Moreover. the choice of this User ID and the first sentence of the 2nd paragraph were bizarre and disrespectful in my opinion. She succeeded in alienating nearly everyone with these statements (again in my humble opinion).

I hope I'll never get her address. It would be so difficult to avoid preaching to her about the awesomeness of the flying spaghetti monster...

I didn't really see anything wrong with her page. And she seems to send postcards that fit others profiles so I don't see what she is doing wrong...

I never commented on this post originally. I do agree with the beautiful bespectacled blond babe that there is nothing wrong with the page.

For me, it is a turn off but there are many things that are a turn off for me that aren't for others. For instance I am not down with people keeping birds as pets even though I love birds. I can see people loving them some Jesus but still being offended by the text on that page. To each his own? I am honestly more distracted by all the erroneous capitalization (and lack thereof where appropriate).

In the end, people are their worst enemy.

Haha Elina; I live in Utah (lots of religious folks) and my husband has a "Flying Spaghetti Monster Fish" (a parody of the Jesus Fish) on his car, he gets questions from people all the time asking what it is, the responses are usually rather amusing. ;)

I find this girl's page rather obnoxious (why does she want to have relations with Jesus?), but who am I to say it is inappropriate? As an Atheist I would be equally annoyed at a page that went on and on about Atheism, but I think whatever people want to put on their page as long as it is not crude (this may be borderline, ha-ha), or hateful should be okay.

I cannot stand it when people make up their own punctuation and grammar rules! This made me smile.:)

@karkar: it may be excessive reading of religious texts where stuff is weirdly capitalized. Then again, I refuse to capitalize god. And, you are right, preachy atheists are just as bad. My last car had a FSM and a Darwin fish sticky. I always wondered about the people who put great big effigies (?) on their back windows showing Jesus fish eating Darwin fish. It just goes to show that they didn't quite get it.

I dont see anything wrong with that profile - i dont find it at all crude or abnoxious - remember it is her profile and unless it is extremely insulting and/or racist then there is no reason for it to be changed - to that user this thread could be insulting to her. Its not like she is forcing your faith onto you, she is merely making a statement of her faith - you are not locked up, forced to read it or forced to agree with it. skip over that paragraph if you do not wish to read it. Simple as that.

As long as she is following the postcrossing rules by sending and registering postcards then there is no harm.

Again each to their own - everyone has their own beliefs, and everyone has to respect this.

No, I don't HAVE to do anything. I don't have respect for religious believes and there is nobody that can convince me why I should do so. Only thing I MUST do in life is dying, simple as it is.

I just got myself a postcard that was full of religious propaganda and I feel truly attacked. I never thought I would ever throw a postcard away, but this one I will. I don't want stuff like that in my home...

I find these profiles more annoying for the mini bio pics :P. I'm so tired of reading the details of how wonderful a person's life is and why; wether Jesus has anything to do with it or not.

no, you are right, you are not obliged to respect anyone or anything

but can we expect others to respect us if we don't respect them?

I have posted this message 9months ago and it is still a hot topic;)

One thing strikes me every time when I am reading someone's profile. Why do people write things in their profiles, which really do not have nothing to do with the whole Postcrossing project??? This profile is just an example, because it could also anything about politics, sex etc. Does it really have to be a whole personal biography???
In my opinion, I really do not have to know the person's religion, political or sexual preferences to know what kind of postcard her or him to send, that is why I think this profile is a form of propaganda.

I have read her profile and don´t find it too much. It´s not mine but if someone thinks that he/ she is in love with Jesus so what... To send such a person a card with Satan or such things only to provocate is really ridiculous and annoying for me because it is childish.
She was not picky in cards and happy to receive anything nice so I think she only wanted to cry out how happy she is. Some people must do this because they cannot do it otherwhere.
And what is really annoying for me is the religious advertisement I see above this topic from the jesus.net. :o

And if someone doesn´t want to read profiles so don´t do it. Just send a card.
By the way I find it interesting to read what crazy or lovely people there are outside. But maybe it will change when I am a Postcrosser for 4 or 5 years. :)

@Rafal: Religious, political and sexual preferences can also lead to the right card. ;)

For me it is an eBay advertisement that is showing above this topic not a jesus.net one.

I think some people see themselves as "on a mission" and just have to use every opportunity to spread their message because they regard it as so utterly important that others learn about it, that they beware of mistakes. I've also red some profiles about aids-awareness, waldorf-schools and how great being gay is or the importance of breast-cancer awareness..or the joy of breastfeeding until your little ones enter college.

When I come across a topic I am put off by, I just try to ignore it, send my card and that's it. Having a different point of view does not put me off (on the contrary, it might be interesting to learn about completely different lifestyles, goals, roles..), but learning things about people which are clearly part of one's private stuff, does. Where I draw the line is absolutely subjective, but I think the missionary or not-aspect plays a role.

I guess a profile rambling about the greatness of some religious figures is ok, whereas one saying "blablabla is great, give it a try and you'll soon be enlightened like me!" is too much. Same goes for everything else..live and let live. ;)
