Using postcrossing for homeschooling
I homeschool my daughters who are 9 and 7 years old, and the postcards that we receive are part of learning about world geography and culture.
I use postcrossing.com for sending/receiving postcards outside of the United States; and swap-bot.com for sending/receiving postcards domestically and
internationally (with more of a focus on domestic exchanges).
It is exciting for them to see the postcards come in the mail and find them on the map. It would be fun to do exchanges with children in other parts
of the world as well.

I'm also doing postcrossing with my 3 daughters that I homeschool-ages 16,14 & 12.It would be great if we could find other postcrossers that are
homeschoolers.
Maybe we can set up something for homeschoolers like round robins or something. |

I think the most people who do home schooling live in the usa. As all kids in Europe attend schools, and i guess other kids around the world too.
You can always look for postcrossers with kids who wanna swap. |

Hi folks - I think Postcrossing would be great for homeschooling. What a great way to meet others and a great way to learn about other cultures.
I've noticed how hard it is to hard to find other people to swap with and have been working on a little project called schoolswaps at http://www.schoolswaps.net - the intention is to link up homeschoolers, educators, teachers, parents and anyone else who wants to swap post.
It's still a work in progress, and is a labour of love but hope to get a few more people involved. It's in it's early stages, but join up and tell me
what you think - it's free! |

I was homeschooled, and I really wish PostCrossing had been around back then! Not sure my mom would have been willing to spend the money, though.
Maybe some local companies could be approached to donate cards and/or postage? Many homeschooling families in our area were quite poor. |

I work as a governess in Australia. It is slightly like home schooling in a way, although there is the wider school community and on-air lessons, etc.
I work in the school room teaching 3 boys 11, 8 and 5. They have to be schooled this way as our closest town is about 2.5 hours drive away. We live on
a 1.2 million acre cattle station. I thought I would sign up on here to send and receive postcards from all over the world to help us with learning a
bit more about different countries and cultures.

UK Home Education
Just wanted to mention that there are quite a few of us home educating in the UK (we tend not to call it homeschooling as most of us do our best to
not educate as a school does - less direct teaching and more autonomous/child-directed learning for instance).
I'm hoping postcrossing will help us expand our global awareness and bring alive "geography" for my daughter and I. We just joined today and are off
to post our first postcards this afternoon! We're also looking into other ways of exchanging mail/packages etc and would appreciate all suggestions.
Thanks, E. |

I am home schooled. I am from Cheshire in the UK but now live in Tasmania. I have been doing postcrossing for 12 months and love it. I get some
help from my mum with mapping the locations of where the cards come from on our world map. Only had one from the UK so far. |

I'm not currently homeschooling but did sign up in large part for the educational aspects for my kids -- now realizing it is also quite fun!
Any ideas of how to post the cards received on some kind of electronic or computer map. We don't really have the wall space currently to do it with a
paper map, though maybe I will have to make that happen somehow.
Maybe each kid could put a dot on their cards from a certain country, different color for each child?
Any other ideas along these lines? Other ways to make the project more educational? |

We have signed up today and are about to start postcrossing. I have 2 daughters 5 and 7 who are keen to get penpals and postcards from people all over
the world, so we are hoping this will help with our 'homeschooling'. We are natural learners/unschoolers so we think this experience will expand our
own global awareness and bring some geography naturally into our learning |

Dear All,
I love the idea of kids having penpals from around the world and I really respect the idea of homeschooling. My mom's a pedagogue -and a bit of a
radical one- and I can say that childhood years are really formative and what you learn and experience as a child stays with you forever. So instead
of U2U'ing you all, I'm writing this open call to you all. I can become a pen-pal to your kids! I'm a sociologist/social anthropologist myself and it
would be an illuminating and cheerful experience for myself too, one can not learn enough about a child's perspective! So it's a two-way learning
experience. Please U2U me if you would like me to write letters or send postcards.
I'm also trying to start a penpalship project for kids in my area, hope I can manage that too. Cultural exchange is very fruitful in early years of
life to enhance tolerance and comprehend diversity.
Love,
Zeynep |
