Question: What is UNESCO?
Hi everyone. I probably sound really dumb, but where do you get your UNESCO postcards? I've seen the website, but
can't find anything! Help! And, why are UNESCO postcards so wanted? Thank You! |

most cards are being bought at the world heritage sites they depict, or in cities close to them.
i gather they are popular because those sites are united nations protected due to their value for mankind. so they are something else than that nice
meadow in the park that looks so well in a pic. |

Just take a look at: http://whc.unesco.org/
There are many sites that are listed as World Heritage, and that list is made by UNESCO, which stands for United Nations Educational Scientific and
Cultural Organization. They don't sell cards or anything, the cards people like are cards that show something from the list.
For example, I went to Cologne last week. The cathedral of Cologne is on the list, so I bought some cards of the cathedral for people who collect
UNESCO World Heritage cards.
I hope it's clear now! |

Well, it was clearly mentioned what UNESCO sites are - and the nearest ones to LA may be Redwood National Park and Yosemite National Park. |

Adding my 2 cents here. Malaysia has 2 UNESCO/WHS i.e. Mulu caves (sarawak) & Mt. Kinabalu (sabah). Both these states are on the island of Borneo |

I'll add 5 cents then
New Zealand has 2 WHS sites
Te Wahipounamu in the South Island - includes Milford Sound, Mt Cook, glaciers
and
Tongariro National Park in the North Island which includes the 3 volcanoes - Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro |

Actually, New Zealand has 3 UNESCO sites. The other one not mentioned above is New Zealand Sub-Antarctic Islands (1998)
http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/877
(If you can find postcards of this site, I would love more of it )
In my opinion, people collect postcards showing UNESCO sites because these are famous places in the world: Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, the Pyramid
at Giza, Petra, Machu Picchu, Acropolis, Grand Canyon, Great Barrier Reef etc.
However, there are many places in the world that are of similar value to the UNESCO sites too. These places are not UNESCO for one reason or another.
Some of them are private properties such as Royal Palaces, churches/temples, castles (e.g. Neuschwanstein). Some countries lack interest in proposing
what's worth preserving as a UNESCO world heritage and never submit a proposal. Postcards of these places are worth collecting as well. |

I was wondering too... Do the postcards say UNESCO on them, or are they just pictures of stuff that's listed but there's no official cards? |

Some cards say or have UNESCO logos, but most don't. Usually there are no official UNESCO cards. You can get any postcard showing the statue of
liberty and it will qualify as a UNESCO card |

Here in my country there's no card that has a logo of UNESCO on it. But sometimes it would say that" it is included in the UNESCO list" at the back |

Yes again! That's one of the fun in collecting them. You got to see different aspects/angles/sides of the same place. For example, I have about 20
something cards from each of Great Smoky Mountain, Yosemite, Yellowstone etc. All of them are UNESCO sites. I got about 50 cards just from Angkor in
Cambodia.
When people trade for UNESCO cards, they prefer to have them unwritten. If you get duplicates, you can use them to trade for other sites missing in
your collection.
Feel free to ask any further questions. |

I have a question about my local UNESCO site. I'm in Florida, so it's the Everglades. So people want pictures of grass? That's basically what it is.
I'm not sure what kind of postcard to send for this site. |

I received an Everglades postcard, it had a pic of crocodile in a water.
For me, I wouldn't mind the postcard that you mentioned. |

For me, a postcard that shows what you mentioned would be wonderful. It actually shows the area and that's where it's all about |

Hi,
I've been to some UNESCO WH places (like Angkor Wat, Borobudur), but only took a lot of nice pictures there.
(Didn't know postcrossing at that time ).
Would it be ok for collectors to receive "handmade" UNESCO cards?
I would use a service like MOO, to get professional looking cards from my pictures ... |

I would say no for most of the UNESCO collectors. The fun is to try to get commercial postcards rather than self-made cards. If you want to send
self-made UNESCO cards, ask first whether they mind that. |
