Circulation156,000 sheets
Printing house Cartor Security Printing, France

About the design  ENG

The Postcrossing.com stamp sheet includes 10 stamps with the denomination ‘International 1’ and the international ‘Priority’ logo. Each stamp contains a colourful image of a noted Dutch tourist attraction, including the Delta Works in the southwest of the Netherlands, Hoge Veluwe National Park, the Binnenhof complex of government buildings in The Hague, the Alkmaar Cheese Market, the tulip fields, the towns of Giethoorn and Marken, the Zaanse Schans collection of classic windmills and houses, and Rembrandt’s painting The Night Watch. The sketches are based on photos which a software application has transformed into colourful planes which extend across the perforations. These planes change colour from the top down, morphing from pink into yellow and green, while the details are dominated by red, light blue and dark blue. The objects and people depicted are separated from the colour planes by white outlines where necessary. A curved line runs across the sheet from top to bottom, symbolising the journey completed by Postcrossing cards all over the globe, with both the cards and the line changing colour in each stamp. Three handwriting fonts were used for the typeface: Populaire (created 2011), Undersong (created 2013) and Daft Brush, all three designed by Ricardo Marcin and Erica Jung and released by PintassilgoPrints.

About the designer  ENG

Graphic designer Reinier Hamel did not have to think twice when he was asked to design the new Postcrossing.com-themed stamp sheet. “It’s a subject that’s near to my heart, as I like the fact that Postcrossing.com establishes global, spontaneous connections between people. Its members, called Postcrossers, use a traditional, ‘old-school’ medium to reveal something of themselves to others. It’s a form of contact that’s slower than email and other modern communication tools. It requires more work – you actually have to make a bit of effort, but you do get something special in return.” In issuing the Postcrossing.com stamps, PostNL seeks to support the Postcrossing initiative while at the same time showcasing some of the Netherlands’ most celebrated tourist sites. The idea behind the website is that Postcrossers not only reveal something about themselves, but also send postcards including images of their country or hometown. The design boasts images of some signature Dutch tourist attractions, as nearly all cards sent by Postcrossers are sent to international destinations and this is a way of drawing attention to some of the country’s most interesting and attractive sites. Reinier Hamel: “PostNL gave me a list of highlights to choose from. I wanted to avoid using classic tourist office-style images and add a personal touch. I used existing photographs and added a graphic layer so I could create my own images. These different images are essentially ‘pulled together’, literally across the stamps’ perforations.” Reinier set out to design a coherent look and feel, resulting in a sheet that is much more than the sum of 10 separate stamps. “I fitted, measured and cropped the images on my screen until I ended up with a single image in which the 10 separate pictures all come together. I was able to create a powerful image for each stamp by using the perforation template of the stamps and making it disappear by clicking on my mouse and then bringing it back again. But the basic idea was to create a single, coherent look.” The designer used his intuition in choosing the ten designs and the photos: “They all had to mesh together, as it were. I also allowed myself a fair amount of leeway to play around with the images. For example, at one point we decided to replace the deer from the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve with deer from the Hoge Veluwe National Park. This meant we needed to pick a new photograph, since the two settings are quite different. I did end up keeping the outlines of the deer antlers I used in the original image. That’s how I essentially created my own reality, my personal collage of our country. I ended up using a more abstract style, since I like to keep people guessing.” I like picture puzzles – I think curiosity is one of the best traits we have as humans.” The stamps stand out by their solid colours, with no gradation between them. Reinier: “I like to use more blunt shapes for images, depending on the level of attention you want to attract to them, and I used the colours to present a slightly alternate visual reality, as it were. Water need not necessarily be blue, and grass doesn’t have to be green. I like using open endings and that slightly rough, ‘unfinished’ look – that’s why the colour planes extend onto the edge of the sheet and abruptly end there.” In the centre of the sheet, Reinier added a subtle line which swirls from top to bottom and symbolises a postcard’s journey from sender to recipient. “It’s also a reference to PostNL, the ‘middle man’ between senders and recipients. I was planning to use that line right from the start, but then it seemed better to leave it out as I didn’t want to clutter up the image. But since I ended up using a more abstract style, there was room for it in the end.” About Reinier Hamel Reinier Hamel, a 1989 graduate of The Hague’s Royal Academy of Art, established A Dog’s Life in 1990, a design company that worked mainly for the government sector. He turned over a new leaf in 2000, when he founded Sin, a “curious, rebellious and multifunctional” creative agency whose team of six employees created exciting and original visual communications. He re-established himself as an independent designer in 2014, still using the name ‘Sin’ and creating clear concepts for media ranging from print media and websites to animations, interiors and complete campaigns. He is increasingly involved in conceiving and implementing comprehensive concepts, including for clients such as the Carnivale circus and fair festival, Festival Classique (annual classical music festival), De Werkfabriek (meeting place for socially responsible business owners) and Lola Bikes & Coffee, of which he is also a co-owner.
