Tofte/Filtvet (outside Oslo) July 13-15 2018 - weekend meetup!

For this meetup we will meet in Oslo and travel together to Tofte.

CITY/REGION: Tofte and Filtvet, Buskerud, Norway
DATE & TIME: Friday, July 13th to Sunday, July 15th 2018
MEETUP PLACE: Aker Brygge, Oslo

After our success with the international meetup here in Oslo last month, we have now decided to take it one step further and host an entire weekend's meetup! Go big or go home! :D

This meetup will be held in two small coastal towns/villages along the Oslo fjord. We will be staying in one, Tofte, and will be traveling to the other, Filtvet (a very short distance, a few kilometers :)). To get there, attendees will take a ferry ride on the beautiful fjord. Tofte is about 2 hours from Oslo.

We're still working out the last details of the program, but we are very happy to share with you the main attraction - a visit to acclaimed artist ida Elisabeth, a well known painter here in Norway. She has been active for many years and is best known for her popular series of postcards. Those of you reading this who attended the September meetup here in Oslo have already seen her work - you received a signed ida Elisabeth postcard in your goodie bags. :) She lives on a beautiful property in the coastal village Filtvet - we will view her beautiful garden, listen to a talk from ida Elisabeth about her art, and (weather permitting) enjoy a picnic lunch in her garden. Of course we will have the chance to buy postcards of her lovely paintings. :)

You can read more about ida Elisabeth and see samples of her art on her website: http://www.idaelisabeth.no/

We will be staying at this hotel: https://www.bikubentofte.no/
which will be filled with nothing but Postcrossers the whole weekend. :) There are 22 beds, so that's the number of places we have.

More info will be coming! If you have any questions, please ask them in this thread - others may be wondering the same thing.

There will be a Facebook event created for this meetup, KAS will be in charge of that. Please note that we need your Postcrossing username to be able to sign you up for the meetup or put you on a waiting list - if there is one. :)

Yes, we will definitely have a meetup card! You can read about that here:

I've posted this in the Facebook Event, but for those of you who aren't there and may not be familiar with ida Elisabeth's work, here's a picture of some of her postcards. :)

Time for some info about prices ... ! I'm sure you are wondering what it will cost to participate in our Postcrossing weekend. Good news: even though it is in Norway, it's actually not wildly expensive. :D These are the costs we know for certain at this point:

All prices are in Norwegian crowns!!

2 nights (Friday to Sunday) at Bikuben: 850,-
This includes breakfast Saturday and Sunday mornings.
The rooms are double so you will all be sharing rooms 2 and 2.

Ferry ticket: This past summer a one way ticket cost 90,- and while the price may be increased a little next summer it shouldn't be by a lot.

The other meals, apart from breakfast, you will also have to pay for, but we don't have any details yet. We are working on this part of the program. :)

There will be a guided tour of the local lighthouse on Friday (the only lighthouse in Buskerud county), we are not sure yet how much this will cost as it depends on the number of participants, but the maximum cost is 50,-.

These two towns/villages are quite small so there isn't a huge selection of shopping opportunities. Of course there are some local postcards available. :) ida Elisabeth sells her postcards at quite sensible prices, and also offers quantity discounts. How much money you spend on them is up to you ;)

Do any of you know if there's any postcards availiable showing this lighthouse?

That's great that you're joining us, Norway_girl! :) As KAS already posted, there are a couple of photo postcards available at the lighthouse itself (or at least there were this past summer :)) and ida Elisabeth also sells some with this motif. She has at least two different paintings of the lighthouse available as postcards, I think more, maybe as much as four if I remember correctly.

We're getting some questions on the Facebook event that need to be addressed - I am not on Facebook so I can only answer questions from there as KAS relays them to me. Inconvenient, I know, but that's life ;)

The rooms at the hotel are double rooms, ie, attendees will be sharing two to a room. If you don't want to share a room with a stranger, then talk a friend into coming too! :) The rooms have twin beds, ie two single beds.

We cannot accept any day guests, sorry!! It is NOT possible to stay at another hotel or privately and go with us on the visit to ida Elisabeth. She has given us a specific limit on the number of attendees we can bring with us. So if you are not staying at Bikuben you will not be a member of our group. We're sorry, but this is not up to us to decide.

Hello, guys!

I am not able to plan ahead till July, but so far I can say: your meet up plans sound interesting, the hotel looks nice, this ferry-thing is a bit confusing, but as I like boats it's all good with me.

But I wonder: How would I get from Oslo to this probably lovely spot on earth without a car? It looks far away from everything. Is it possible to get there with public transport?

Hello Killewips!

Of course we understand that July is still quite a ways off, but we are hoping that knowing about the meetup so far in advance will make it easier for people to plan for it :) Should I add you to the list as a possible attendee?

The ferry ride is the public transport that will take you to the meetup :) The boat departs from the City Hall docks in the heart of Oslo and takes its passengers to Filtvet as one of the last stops, it takes about two hours. The committee will be there to meet it. If you don't want to take the ferry you can also take the bus, but this is a little more complicated as there is no direct bus so you will have to change from one bus to another. We can inform you about this if it becomes relevant. The ferry is much easier though. The ferry route is part of the public transport system in the Oslo area.

Ah, now I got it!

When I read this...

...I thought the ferry ride would be between Tofte and Filtvet (might sound funny to you, but makes perfect sense to me as I am completely unaware of the area ;) )

And this...

... I thought would be a general information about directions, not something specific for the ferry ride.

So - thanks for the information. Sounds even better as before with the promise of a two hour tour on a Norwegian fjord! :)

Write me on the list as a maybe. :) I have to check some things before - among them: can I get some days off from work around that weekend? And: Is there money left for the trip from Berlin to Oslo in addition to the other travel plan I already made...? So many places to see, so few money in my pocket...

Now I understand the confusion ... ! :) Yes, Tofte is about 2 hours from Oslo, but it's close enough to Filtvet that you can walk from one to the other. :) Like I said you can also take the bus to either of the two places but of course the ferry ride is much nicer ... ! I should also clarify that while part of the committee will be meeting the ferry in Filtvet, at least one of us will also be riding with the ferry from Oslo. :)

I totally know what you mean about too many places to visit and too little money :( But we're happy to know you are considering our meetup! :)

After Kari made a lot of advertising for this meeting last weekend I'll keep my eyes on it. I would involve it, if I can come, in my summer holiday plans. But I'm not sure about exact travelling time & budget, so it's just an idea in this moment.
