Bury St Edmunds Saturday 15 June 2019 - initial post updated with fresh information

I would like to organise a Postcrossing meeting in the historic town of Bury St Edmunds. Who would like to join me?

Date: Saturday 15 June 2019
Time: 11.00 am
Place: Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Meet at J D Wetherspoons Corn Exchange, Abbeygate Street, IP33 1UL.

Why Bury St Edmunds? It's a historic town, with a cathedral church, well worth visiting. There's a Norman Gateway and Abbey Gateway either side of the Cathedral, and Moyses Hall Museum, not to mention the extensive Abbey Gardens with the beautiful ruins of what was once the third largest abbey in England, originally built to contain the shrine of St Edmund who was patron saint of England before St George. Also in the Abbey Gardens are bird-cages with many exotic birds including budgerigars, a Chinese or Golden pheasant and lovebirds - but no toucans:barfy: On the day of our meeting there will be a special exhibition at Moyses Hall Museum about Alice in Wonderland, including many illustrations from the first edition of the book.

Postcards are available at the following locations:-
Paper Chase at the Arc Shopping Centre, behind W H Smith;
Waterstones (Salmon cards, 25p each) at the Apex Shopping Centre, also behind W H Smith;
W H Smith, in a beautiful building on the Cornhill (new Judges cards, 45p each) - Post Office upstairs;
Moyses Hall Museum, Cornhill (admission £5, concessions £3; no charge to enter the shop where postcards are 35p for moderns and 45p for reproductions);
Tourist Information/Cathedral Shop (cathedral and town cards 40p each);
St Mary's Church, next to the Norman Gateway (30p each);
Angel News, Abbeygate Street (good selection but price not marked).

Bury St Edmunds is also home to The Nutshell, the smallest public house in the UK, which is next door to the Corn Exchange.

Access to Bury St Edmunds is by train, bus or road, although the train station and long-stay car park leave a bit of walking to do.

Timetable: Once we have all assembled perhaps we can visit the Moyses Hall Museum (entrance charge applies); then head down towards the cathedral and have lunch, possibly in the cathedral restaurant or, if the weather is good, have a picnic among the abbey ruins. A visit to the cathedral is recommended, and we'll make time for writing and signing cards, as well as swapping postcards.

Please note: Wetherspoons is upstairs at the Corn Exchange and there is no lift. There are two staircases. I'll try to find a central meeting place upstairs and I aim to be there around 10.30 am for coffee - look for toucans postcards on the table!

A camera is strongly recommended! I'll do my best with regard to the weather but I can't guarantee a fine day!

Meeting cards: Julian (mapcardcollector) will be bringing meet-up cards, approximately ten for each attendee, thereafter cards on a first-come-first-served basis. Expect to pay about 25p per card.

Attendees:
toucans - confirmed
Constanze (can't make it)
StuartH - confirmed
Angiebaby - confirmed
Phoebscanary- confirmed
Londoncat (maybe)
piscean - confirmed previously
mapcardcollector - confirmed
wanamirul0706 (maybe)

and ... you?

Thanks, Stuart. I'll cross my fingers for you too.

I'm afraid I don't have the technology myself, so if anyone can provide a meet-up card for this event I'll be most grateful!

I have produced a meet-up card. Due to the small numbers ( I have printed 250) I'm afraid they will be 25p each but that is still cheaper than anything in the shops. The picture is of the Norman Gateway from a book published in 1885 so a bit "retro" but appropriate for an historic town.

I am sure that there will be plenty of meet-up cards to go round so there should not be any need to restrict numbers.
