Some Suggestions for Profile Enhancements

Hi, Postcrossing.com Moderators:

(01) How about putting a date-time stamp on the bottom of the Profile showing the time of lastUpdate? It can be useful to know when a Member last updated their Profile. That timestamp should not count towards the 3000 character count we're allowed in our Profiles. And somewhere on the site, please state that all date-time references are in Portugal time (UTC±00:00).

(02) Put a "Favorite" button on the bottom of the Profile page just like the one for postcards along with the "See Who" feature. If we can "favorite" postcards, why not "favorite" Profiles, too?

Thanks.

What would be the reason to favourite a profile?
I understand one can place cards as favourite in the hope of receiving that card some day (like I do), but why a profile?

And, would hearts disappear while updating a profile?
Would you get a notice when a profile you favorited, changes? Because maybe there's something in the update you don't like anymore.

Profiles are different from Postcards.

I didn't know that someone would mark a Postcard as a favorite to signal to others that you want a Postcard like that sent to you. Thanks for letting me know.

I understand "favorite" more simply. It just means you like it. If someone wants to explain why they like a Postcard or what the implication of that liking might be ("Please send me one, too"), then they can make a Comment on that Postcard. We don't now have that same capability with regard to Profiles.

The reason to favorite a Profile would be to say simply I like your Profile. That could start a conversation. It might also encourage some Members perhaps to update their own based on what they've seen of others' Profiles. What makes a good Profile? If a Profile had been favorited and I could see that, I would definitely take a look to see why others had done so and maybe learn from or just enjoy it. Just like for Postcards.

Yes, the hearts would disappear if the Profile was updated and we should get a notice when Profiles we've favorited have changed. Just like for Postcards, you could un-favorite a Profile, too. Perhaps Profiles could be archived for several versions (maybe 3?) along with the favorites.

We could work out the details all together later as we go along.

The point is to give Profiles, which are probably as important as any data on Postcrossing, a little more of the functionality that is associated with Postcards themselves. Yes, they are different. But I think enhancing their sharing and visibility is a good thing.

Thanks.

To favourite profiles means somehow to value the people behind the profiles. I think that is too facebookish, so I would not like that very much.

Hi, RalfH:

I never thought of it that way, but if you do, that's okay.

I don't think marking a Profile as a favorite judges the people behind the Profile. As I wrote, it just meant you like the Profile. And I don't know very much about FaceBook, so I can't say anything about that.

I do think a lot of Profiles could use a lot of improvement and that's why I had the idea to allow Profiles to be "favorited" so that we all could see what is regarded positively by the community and learn from it.

Please note that I did NOT say that a Profile should or could be disliked or disapproved of in any way. Maybe that's what you think is FaceBook-ish. I simply wish that there be a way to let people know what other people like about a Profile.

If I may say, AMDGIHS2019, your profile - while beautifully written - looks very hard to understand for a person with average level English and completely incomprehensible to someone using translating software. This I find would be a risk of favouriting profiles. It's a way to express your personality and a way to introduce yourself, literary or not, but at a same time it serves a function of communicating to the sender who they are sending their card to and what kind of a person they might be. We should not stray to far from the basic needs of the senders.

Hi, elanlei:

Well, Postcrossing is a "Big Tent", able to accommodate everyone.

Thank you for your compliment and constructive criticism of my Profile. Please know that my current Profile was a "Mozartian" Moment. I just sat down one Sunday afternoon, typed it straight out, and clicked "Update"!

All I'm trying to do in my Profile is tell folks that they can confidently send just about anything and maybe add a dash of whimsy with some musical give-and-take. I hope that everyone can understand that.

If you don't think they can, or it requires too advanced English skills, or it's untranslatable at translate.google.com, then I may have to reconsider my Profile in the light of what you call "the basic needs of the senders". As a Sender myself, I don't think I have any "needs" except to be friendly at a fundamental human level. Sending a card is not at all about me. It's about the Receiver, if at all. It might not be about either of us. It could just a shared moment in time, like a haiku or a sunset.

It never occurred to me that I was or should be "expressing my personality", "introducing myself", "communicating to the sender who I am", or revealing "what kind of person I might be". Those kinds of things are, unfortunately, a lot of what many Profiles are all about, including wish-lists of the kinds of postcards people want or don't want. Such is life.

Judging by the posts in this thread, "favoriting" of Profiles is going nowhere fast. That's how it goes. You run it up the flagpole and see who salutes. If nobody salutes, then it's time to move on.

Happy Postcrossing!
