NARR June 2019 – Report #4

#06 MikeyZ1: sent an illustration (and recipe to) a fully-dressed Chicago-style hot dog. It looks delicious! But I agree with you. Meat is murder. And I too don’t like a lot of the vegan substitutions; they’re just as processed! Eating healthy is difficult and life is full of temptations. You and yours look like you’re doing well with the challenge. Thanks!

#12 FlagGazer: sent a shot from Petrified Forest National Park. I’ve always wanted to visit this one, ever since handling a chunk of petrified wood as a kid at some roadside gem emporium in the Catskills. The whole process of petrification, once living cells being marinated by minerals, fascinates me. Glad you had a chance to go once. Thanks!

#19 Kclou13: sent an amazing, gorgeous, and colorful view of one my favorite National Parks, Death Valley. This card captures the majesty captured in all the different formations, from valley basin, dunes to mountains. An incredible spot. And I agree with you about the benefits of being out in nature… Thanks!

#27 Hyshu65: sent a shot of the Texas State Capitol building in Austin. Beautiful building, and love the Texas Ranger monument in this shot – better than the Confederate Dead memorial which was recently vandalized at the same site. Nice assortment of stamps and stickers, too. Thanks!

#28 Alm74: sent a view of the main drag in Ouray, Colorado, the self-proclaimed best-preserved Victorian-styled main street in Colorado! I love the Durango area. Took the touristy steam train ride there. Very quaint and rustic, and you were quite lucky to see snow in April. Great Thurber stamp, too. Thanks!

You can view all these incoming June cards HERE...

Wow! Such awesome cards were waiting for me upon my return from Louisville! Thanks to:

#2 mischelina for the perfect cat wrapped in yarn card from the artist Maria van Bruggen. Great stamps and cat stamp! Yeah, I've never been a fan of Orlando either, and I certainly couldn't stay in town with you-know-who arriving!

#3 cruzin for the awesome Royal Shakespeare Company Hamlet card. Love the cat sticker and stamps.

#5 alcott1 for Evan Williams Bourbon Experience card. I just returned from Louisville myself! I didn't get the chance to visit this distillery, but made the rounds of the great restaurants and breweries. Love the Golden Spike stamp.

#6 mikeyz1 for the adorable "Animals in War" card with the patriotic stamps. If every war ship had adorable cats, there would be no war, because no one would want to hurt the cats. (However, if the cats take over...LOL)

#13 ladybug513 for the card from the National Museum of Finland: Funeral coat of arms in memory of Erik von der Linden. Fabulous space themed stamps. What a great anniversary trip you had! We just celebrated our 5 year (legal)/15 year (illegal) anniversary this week :)

#16 hootnoodle for the Early Warning Signs of Fascism card with great stamps. I am about to leave for Europe for the "Holocaust Tour" with my students, so this is quite appropriate.

#17 Yoiyumtewa for the Implosion of the Sands hotel in Vegas. I wish I had been in Vegas before all of the Rat Pack era hotels and casinos were destroyed.

#18 mere5oh for the New Mexico food card :) It is always sad to say goodbye to our exchange kids as well. We say goodbye to Oscar in just 6 days! But we know we will see him again soon. Our Niklas, for example, has been back three times to visit and we've been back to see him in Germany. I will see him in a couple weeks when I'm in Munich and then he'll be back in September to visit us :)

#19 kclou13 for the Old State Bank of Alabama card.

#20 serafaina for the approprate Mildred Loving card. Our anniversary is on the anniversary of the Loving decision in 1967. I will check out the website for sure!

#23 steresem for the card of the Multnomah County Library in Portland, Oregon. What a beautiful building!

#27 Hyshu65 for the Austin Skyline card. It's been over 20 years since I've been in Austin. The skyline sure has changed! Great stamps :)

#28 alm74 for the Ouray, Colorado card. What a picturesque little town!

#39 Rocky for the Golden Spike card with corresponding stamp :) Pefect card!

Thanks for doing a great job hosting, Mike!

#26 has been oh so happy to receive...

#5 - The Falls of the Ohio - so beautiful. And one of the new railroad stamps! :)

#6 - OMG! A Volvo GL! Love the grille on this model. This is from 1982. Gosh, I must collect all the Volvos. Must. Awesome, vintage stamps as well!

More later!

#17 has received more cards!

#3 cruzin NAC News magazine cover, Oct 1954, Air New Zealand archive. Cool 50s style art. Thing about dips (salsa vs. guacamole)--I actually prefer taste of salsa over guacamole)

#4 Angeldreamer vintage card of James Fort, Jamestown, VA. As many times as I've been to SE Virginia, and like history, I've never made it to Jamestown. You mention "the good old days"--I don't know about other people, but what I miss is being a kid, and not having "adult" things to be concerned about--and yes, some of that is "safety"--Mom and Dad were the protectors, right?

#6 Mikeyz NYC focusing on Central Park. I've only been to NYC twice, and neither time did I make it to Central Park. Guess I am a bad tourist.

#12 Flaggazer Timberline Lodge, Mt Hood OR Lantern Press, retro of the lodge

#16 hootnoodle Half Dome, Yosemite National Park. When I lived and worked at Grand Canyon and then in Flagstaff, I remember interacting with some of the (at that time) Elderhostel groups. Now I think I am old enough to participate....is it worth it to do so? I'll have to look up the "Road Scholar" program.

#19 kclou13 "Alabama morning"....sunrise on a wooded country road

#22 austen777 Bennington Battlefiled State Historic Site, Hoosick Falls, NY

#25 gbnaabennett Buenos Aires Argentina map card. I love lemon curd....thanks for the recipe...may just have to try to make it.

This is the first time we have traveled with this group, and I don't know how other trips could measure up. Our instructor was absolutely superb! After our five days with her at Yosemite, I really wanted to take her along to more parks where we were on our own. At Sequoia, we visited the Big Trees Museum, and found we didn't learn much because Shirley had already taught us a lot about the giant sequoias. Also, there were only 14 people in our group, and I think they can be as big as 22. Because the emphasis is on education, the group members all seemed quite compatible.

Two cards arrived today.

#3 Cruzin - an illustration of a gorgeous falcon. I unsuccessfully tried to find it in my bird book, so I assume it isn't native to North America. Where does your daughter work, where there is an on-site falconry?

#22 austen777 - a poster for the musical "Jesus". Glad you got to see an excellent show. I haven't heard of that musical. Last weekend we had fun seeing "The Producers". It was at an amateur theatre, but very well done.

Thank you both.
