"See" the world with postcards! :D

Meet Catherine, from Kansas, USA. Catherine is a 9 year-old girl that did a wonderful 4-H display featuring Postcrossing (complete with a world map and many postcards) and got a blue-ribbon for it! We loved her idea!

Here's what she had to say:

"My name is Catherine Davidson and I'm a member of a Reno Bobwhites 4-H club. I am in my second year of the Citizenship project. Part of being a good citizen is knowing about the world around you. My sister and I decided to learn about other countries in a fun way. We joined a postcard trading club called postcrossing. To participate, you sign-up at http://www.postcrossing.com by giving them your address and some things that you are interested in. Then you are assigned 5 people from different countries to send a postcard to. When the people get your postcards, they register them on the web-site. Then your name is randomly assigned to other people to send you postcards, and you are assigned five more people to send postcards to. It's fun because you never know where the next postcard will come from. When we get a new postcard, we look on the globe to see where that country is. Look for the smiley faces on the cloth map of the world to see where we have sent or received postcards! My favourite postcards have come from Finland, Thailand and Norway. Postcard trading is a great way to "see" the world!"

We agree. Two thumbs up, Catherine! :-)

Ha~ That's just the reason why we are so addicted to postcrossing! XD

Really great article! :) After reading it, it reminds me the very first excitement when I found this project(postcrossing). This kind of excitment is still here in my mind whenever I receive a postcard from any other places of the earth! Great job! Catherine!

I had no clue what 4-H is, either, but here's a link that explains it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4-H

Nice display, Catherine!

*Chuckles* I was in 4-H. It's a nationwide (USA) (or nearly nationwide, at least) association where kids join local clubs and, through the clubs as well as personal study, do projects (like birdwatching, woodworking, fashion design, "all about farm equipment", etc.) and then take those projects to be judged. First they go to county (small regional) judging, then state, then national. You're also graded on how well you completed your workbook and any 'extra curricular' things you did. You get ribbons, and, as you go further up, various things like plaques, trophies, etc.

Ages to do projects range from 6 (?) to 18 or 19, and are judged accordingly.

I've gone to state with a few projects; it's amazing looking out over the crowds and knowing how many people did this or that project. Quite a lot of fun.
