Mood: Keep Calm and Carry On

[*] posted on 1-7-2010 at 03:07 PM

Well since this is my first year of postcrossing I'll consider myself lucky because I only have 2 expired cards. One to USA and one to Australia. I think the one to the USA got lost during the Island volcano problems in transport, I still haven't decided should I resend the card or keep it the way it is. Any thoughts on the subject?

Total numbers of expired cards tell nothing. It is all about the ratio - how many cards get lost out of hundred sent (actually sent, including traveling) cards.

Of course if one sends a lot of cards, the possibility to face expired card increases.

For instance - if one says he has three cards expired: out of 30 it's 10% and that is a lot. But if it is out of 300 it's 1% and that sounds "normal" to me, unfortunately.

I have sent 100 official cards. Currently I have 6 travelling cards, and 3 expired cards.

Two expired cards go to China, and one to Cuba.

I have 14 expired cards at the moment with my account chrissybaby and soon there will be one more :(

What annoys me that active users don't even answer any messages when I asked if cards arrived. I re-send any cards when I get feedback from people. It happened that people had simply forgotten to register cards. :o

I am still fairly new to postcrossing, and am very heartbroken by the fact that the first postcard I ever tried to send on the official site just expired a few days ago :(

6 out of my 12 traveling cards seem to have disappeared - one expired today, 5 more will expire over the next few days. What's irritating is that I messaged all 6, and only 1 person bothered to reply to let me know that my card definitely hadn't reached her (so I resent her a card). Most are to new members.

I have 105 successfully sent cards and 6 expired cards in a little over a year of postcrossing. Half of the expired cards were sent to early twenty-year old students. Too busy or too short of an attention span? I wonder.

When a card has been taveling for 60 days, it expires. It can still be registered (and it often is) for a year after the day it was sent. When a card expires, you get to send a new one, the same way as if it had been registered.

Whether an expired card was never sent or never received doesn't actually matter - the important thing is that it was never registered. To avoid having expired cards in your sent list, you have to send them, of course. ;) Apart from using correct postage, writing the address and ID neatly and correctly, and mailing the card soon after you requested the address, there's little you yourself can do to avoid expired cards. You can send the receiver a message when the card has been traveling for a really long time (but be aware that mail going abroad can take much longer than you might expect) or even send a second card, but you don't have to. It's your own choice.

You cannot influence cards that have been sent to you going expired, as long as you register all received cards.

I sent 24 cards, 1 travelling and 6 expired :( I sent around 150 cards on forum, they're all recieved but one. I sent again, now it's recieved, too. Unfortunately this makes me lose my trust to postcrossing. I sent messages to them most of them say "No, I haven't recieved yet." or maybe "I'm on holiday, now". I guess I have a bad luck about it.
Here they are:

TR-87228 kampen27 Netherlands 9/Feb/2012 2,521 km 137 days Expired
TR-87227 dr_colba Russia 9/Feb/2012 1,645 km 137 days Expired
TR-86869 suchada Thailand 6/Feb/2012 7,218 km 140 days Expired
TR-83110 ViktorijaB Lithuania 28/Dec/2011 1,737 km 180 days Expired
TR-81097 cayla China 8/Dec/2011 6,818 km 200 days Expired

This is a list of expired postcards to those who don't join postcrossing any more or do it just occationally. It's a pity to see how mauch time and money has gone wasted... especially if you do consider that among these expired cards there are other to user who still take part to Postcrossing and which I have not put in the list.
In addition to these, there are many cards more that are goning to expire: this really upset me!!!
I really wonder why the system still allows these people to get postcards.
Here's the list:

aevesa - ECUADOR - sent on Sep 14. User absent for 22 days.
javier - SPAIN - sent on Sep 18. User absent for over 1 month.
superliss - UK - sent on Sep 14. User absent for over 1 month.
derblume - BELARUS - sent on Jun 23. User absent for 22 days (but frequently absent for long periouds).
Kaljuhka - UKRAINE - sent on Jun 19. User absent for 15 days.
elzstrum - LITHUANIA - sent on May 17. User absent 1month (before the last connection, she has been absent for almost eight months).
pandape - THAILAND - sent on Mar 7th. User absent for over 7 months.

After being inactive long enough their addresses won't be given out anymore. At the time you got their addresses they were still regarded as active by the system and the system can't really predict when someone is going to become inactive. Or your postcard simply didn't make it to its destination. Mail does get lost sometimes.

I myself have 18 expired postcards at the moment and they are all more or less to inactive users.
