How to write a good penpal ad (includes links to penpal sites)

I've been meaning to open up a thread like this for a very long time. I think it would be really nice to have a place where people can post tips about finding pen pals - links to websites, suggestions for how to write an "ad", etc.

I see a lot of people starting threads with very vague titles like "Looking for a pen pal" or "New pals wanted" or even just "Penpals" and then they wonder why they get hundreds of "hits" - but nobody replies. :o

You'll have a lot more success with your ad if you're very specific in the subject line. List exactly what you're looking for. Here are some examples of what I mean:

"40 year old American mom looking for other moms around the world for snail mail"
"Looking for e-pals age 14-18 from Asian countries"
"Looking for pals of any age worldwide who love Pistachio Ice Cream".

The more specific you are, the easier it will be for your future pals to find you. :)

Then, in the main part of your ad, please include at least a little information about YOU - your age, your interests, the type of person you'd like to write to (age, gender, nationality, etc), whether you prefer snail mail or e-mail - things like that. The more information you can give about yourself, the more tempted people will be to respond! ;)

Some pen pal sites that I really like:

Nanou's Penpal Corner
Penpal International
Europa Pages
Mom Penpals Worldwide
Students of the World (for kids, students, and teachers)

and my absolute favorite:

Postcrossing Pen-Friendship

Postcrossing is such a great place to find pen pals (I know because I've found a few here myself!).

Good luck everybody! I hope you find fantastic friendships that will last a lifetime! :D

Thanks, darcy! I'm hoping that people will post their own suggestions and favorite pen pal websites here, too. :)

Good idea to open this topic Julie! I see many people look for pal but they don`t tell anything (or not much) about themselves.

Thanks, guys!

I'm always frustrated when I see 60 ads that just say "Pen Pals" or "Looking for pen pals". Who has time to open up and read 60 ads? :o

It's so much easier when people put exactly what they're looking for in the subject line/title. :)

i agree too, JulieD

i think these 2 penpal sites are nice, too, though ones where you have to display your e-mail address always cause junk mail problem

I use interpals too and have found some wonderful people there.

There are also good applications on facebook for finding penpals.

My absolute favourite is of course, postcrossing! I have met some WONDERFUL people here - people who are not only penpals, but real friends. To me, there's a real difference :) I think that people who are postcrossing addicts (like yours truely ;)) have similar values and ideas of what a letter should look like. Plus, we have at least one hobby in common!

Some advice... when adding a penpal ad here, say something about yourself! Of course, you don't need to say TOO much, but age, location and a small blurb is always interesting. Another thing I appreciate is something like - how much you'd intend to write, how often you intend to reply, maybe if you're in to adding things into the envelope... I think it's neat to kind of 'know' something about who you're writing to :)

So... that's my 2 cents! ;);)

At http://www.iys.fi (International Youth Service, IYS), you could find hints on letter writing. IYS is and pen pal organization for school kids between 10 and 20 years, but the hints may help grown ups, too.

EDIT: IYS doesn't exsist anylonger.

Years ago before I had a own computer/internet I used IPF (international penfriends) to get penfriends, there you have to pay for a list with 14 addresses. I wrote to almost all of them, only a few wrote back, and one of them is my penfriend ive been writing to over 10 years :-)

I joined IPF in 1996 and have formed great friendships through them. Their service is aimed at all ages.

Thanks, JulieD., for the named sites!

In fact there are so many penpal sites in the net - it is totally unclearly and difficult to figure out which sites are the best.
Best wishes and keep on writing!

Thanks for the links - I totally got addicted to Interpals :), ha! Great site and what's the best thing about it - you can chat with people first before deciding whether you want to start snail-mailing, too. I already found a few great penpals there :).

Thanks for all the sites, but how do you trust them? I don't want to post my address on unknown site like that because I don't want some perv to see it. Then again, I suppose I suppose I already give out my address here...
