Ok, I am thinking March 25-27. I need to check when I have midterms, but other than that, i have no conflicts. Please let me know if you are extremely committed to participating and this date is really bad for you, otherwise, let's aim for that weekend.

I have a rough itinerary in my head but it's late so I will post that tomorrow.

Hello everyone, I am finally getting the rough draft of the agenda put together. I will add a simplified version to the first post as soon as I get it all together. Please, if you are interested in participating in the meet up, send me a U2U with your name, best email address and phone number. If you don't want to give your phone number, I understand. I just want to be able to contact everybody in case something comes up. Also, please let me know how many people (if any) will be with you so I can make our dinner reservation.

I am really looking forward to this and hope everyone can make it.

Also, spread the word, invite anybody and everybody who you think might be interested. The more, the merrier! :bouncy:

Hello everyone, I have posted the simplified version of the agenda so you can get an idea of what is in store for all of you. Please let me know if you want to participate and I will email the more detailed agenda to you. So far we only have one confirmed postcrosser other than myself  so I hope more of you can come.

If you go to the Old Post Office Building, you should stamp the meet-up postcards with the National Parks stamp. The stamp pad/zone is right before the elevator up to the top. The last time I was there, we must have stamped 20 or so postcards under the bemused regard of the Ranger on duty. (PS If you decide to do another meet-up in the summer, drop me a line as I might be in town.)

I am interested in the meet-up and will be following this thread. I live in Washington, D.C. so it would be easy for me to participate, though I don't know that I could do the "full" itinerary.

lapoussine35, thanks for the tip re: the special postmark available at the Old Post Office Building. I did not know about that and I have (only) lived in D.C. for 19 years!

Cheers

I am very interested in attending! I'm in Pittsburgh, but I can get to D.C. As for Union Station for postcard hunting ... when I was there in March 2010, it was pretty thin pickings for postcards. And, as I recall, rather expensive (I find anything over 40¢ expensive). But ... the museum gift shops usually have great postcards and though they really are expensive, they are very, very nice.

I'll send a U2U, ifthelensfits. With my contact details. And thank you to ladybug513 for the heads up!

Zmrzlina, there are a couple of places in Union Station that sell postcards and from what I have seen the prices aren't too bad. I have only allotted 45 min for exploring mostly because I know there selection is small, but Union Station is a nice place to see. The schedule is fluid, so if everybody tires quickly we can depart early.

ladybug513, thank you for spreading the word.

Medusa242, thanks for the heads up. No worries if you aren't able to participate in everything. If you would like to U2U me your email address (this is, of course, not required) I can share any updates with the whole group, especially if they are last minute. I hope I get to meet you, it is great finding out about DC-based postcrossers.

I am thinking I am going to come. Will let you know. As an FYI for anyone, I read that the Smithsonian American History Museum is open until 7:30 pm on Saturday March 26 as special extended hours for Spring Break holiday time.

Just to let everyone know, there is NO special postmark available at the Old Post Office.

I went there today after work, postcards in hand, and was told by the clerk that she does not hand cancel postcards or any other mail. She says she only sells stamps. She seemed surprised that I would even ask.

So I went across the street to the Benjamin Franklin station post office. I patiently waited in line for at least 10 minutes (only 1 clerk was open) and asked for my postmarks. The (lady) clerk very loudly snapped at me that they do not give out postmarks and that I should put them in the post box and that they will get canceled that way.

Well, I don't want that cancel! Not to mention that not all items that go into a postbox get canceled! (Which I told her). Then she snapped again, even more loudly.

I've spent enough on postage and postcards to pay her salary for a year, at least.

I'm very angry :flaming: and I will not be visiting either of these places during the meet - I will simply participate in the other activities.

P.S. I worked at Union Station for almost a year and the postcard pickings are slim and overpriced, at best. It's a beautiful building, of course, but I would not say it is good for postcard-buying.

Cheers

To clarify the confusion about a special postmark available at the Old Post Office:

The thing lapoussine35 is talking about is NOT a postmark for stamping mail. It is a National Park Passport Stamp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Park_Passport_Stamps
Some people who are into visiting all the National Park Sercice areas buy special "passports" (they are of course not real passports), that they get stamped at a Ranger station when they visit each place.

Medusa242, I am sorry to hear about your not-so-positive experience, people can be inconsiderate. That being said, the only place I know of that still hand cancels mail is the Mount Vernon Postoffice. The little one that looks almost like a mobile home, just beyond the roundabout. And as a bonus, the staff there are always very pleasant. :) I hope this helps.

Oh wow, I haven't been postcrossing much lately, but have always wanted to meet-up. This is a wonderful idea. I live in Richmond, so a drive to DC is no problem for me. I just need to make sure I can take off work that weekend.

Is there a deadline to let you guys know if I can make it for sure?

Will be booking a room. For anyone who has attended a meet-up before, should we be bringing postcards to swap? Is there anything we should know?
