4th International Meeting @ London/Oxford 3rd - 5th May 2013 - new thread open for 2014
2014 meeting thread =
https://forum.postcrossing.com/viewthread.php?tid=86728#pid6389369
The programme is as complete as I can do so read on
Cost of a stamp to send a postcard outside the UK will be 88p (a rise of 1p from now) and 50p or 60p (2nd or 1st class) within the UK (no change)
useful web sites:
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ has all the travel within London details you will need, buses, tube etc and details on the Oyster Card which is
recommended.
http://www.bigbustours.com/eng/london/custompage.aspx?id=london_sig... if you are in London for a few days and want to do a sightseeing tour (although I think the Oyster card and using the Red buses and tubes is a
cheaper way if you feel confident enough).
http://www.visitoxfordandoxfordshire.com/travel-information/map.asp... for a free downloadable city centre map (recommended).
http://www.aliceinwonderlandshop.co.uk/ Alice's Shop. The on line shop is in my opinion not worth using as the range of cheaper gifts in the shop
(including many postcards) is not shown.
What do I need to bring ?
This question has been asked each year so I thought I would put together some kind of check list - of course feel free to ignore it and just bring
yourself!
1. Any cards you want to get signed for officials, Round Robins etc.
2. If you can you will find it easier to bring sticky address labels for any cards you want to send out. Past experience tells me that having to write
lots of addresses on cards really delays the signing process (you will see what I mean if this is your first meeting).
3. At least one pen or your ink stamp/tiny name labels.
4. Don't forget to bring a prize of some sort for the free raffle - wrapped if possible - something that another postcrosser might like. Raffle will
be during the meal and everyone will get something
5. Any cards you may want to trade, also some of us usually have cards for you to look through and just take what you want with no swap needed.
Friday 3rd May 2013
I will available all day to guide anyone who wants to around various places to buy postcards and the best Post Office to get nice stamps.
TWO MEETING POINTS fixed are 10.00 outside Scribblers Card Shop at the front of Victoria Station (opposite Red Bus Station)
and 16.00 outside Waterstones Book Store against the railings at Trafalgar Square.
18.00 onwards some of us will be in the Lord Moon of the Mall pub on Whitehall (16-18 Whitehall, SW1A 2DY) for any who want to have a
chat over a meal and a drink (or two) - mine is a J2O any flavour.
http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/home/pubs/the-lord-moon-of-the-mall
Saturday 4th May 2013
The plan is to travel from London (Victoria) to Oxford on the 08:05 (stop 10 Buckingham Palace Road) Oxford Tube
coach service which should have us in Oxford Gloucester Green Bus Station by 09:50. The vehicles used on this are double deck coaches, fully
accessible and with free wifi. Planned return is on the 20:10 from Oxford. Fare is £16 or 30 Euros day return (subject to any fare changes between now
and then).
http://www.oxfordtube.com
On arrival in Oxford we will meet with those, mainly UK, postcrossers who are joining us for the day.
Meeting place is Cafe Nero [91 Gloucester Green] at 10:00 (for a 10:30 start) which has an entrance from the bus station and
also onto the Square behind where there are a few outside tables (or inside depending on the weather).
A walking trip to all the main places to buy postcards (going past the post office for anyone who needs it) will be followed by free time in the city
before meeting up again for the meal, raffle and postcard signing activities.
The Meal
The meal and postcard signing will be at The Red Lion, 14 Gloucester Street. A photo of which that Steve took 30th March is here and the menu can be found on the website http://www.redlionoxford.co.uk/ . Note the menu might change slightly before our visit and there are always several "specials" as well. We have a
reserved area from 15:30 to18.30 after which we will have to move to the bar area as they need the area the usual Sat night meals.
Tourist Postcards in general are the larger 7" by 5" (18cm x 12.5cm aprox) size and are generally 35p each or 3 for £1.00 or 5 for £1.50 (I did find
one shop doing 20 for £5). The normal 6"x4" cards are available from a few places the best being "The Works" where they are 20p each (3 for 50p).
Sunday 5th May 2013
I am happy to meet those still in London for a coffee and chat with maybe a little postcard shopping if you still don't have enough Thought it might be fun to visit Covent Garden for the LT Museum shop,
the one Gallery and maybe even the Moomin Shop

One thing I thought we would do this year is to have a free raffle.
Everyone brings something along (wrapped) as a prize then we all get given a number. All numbers are then put in a hat (or something) and pulled out -
when your number is called you choose your "prize" until all have gone and everybody has something. If there any left over then the numbers are all
put in again and drawn until everything has gone.
So the rules:
Everyone brings at least one wrapped "prize" the value is up to you.
It can be anything you think will be liked some examples might be -
Souvenir(s) from your home town/country
Set of Postcards
Stationary
I hope you all get the idea - any questions just ask. |

I'm in on the Oxford day only.
Where and when do we meet in Oxford?
Remember to include Blackwell's on the sightseeing. I'm quite sure I'm not the only bookworm in the group - the main shop is simply just impressive, and the poster shop has a
great selection of postcards. |

My partner Mark and I would love to come along to Oxford! I'll certainly bring along a pile of Somerset/Devon/Cornwall postcards if people are
interested in swapping! Love the raffle idea too! |

Oh...I just typed a load of stuff and then my pc flashed and it all disappeared, so I have to start again.
Planning to attend the Oxford day with my husband, John ( not a Postcrosser, but very supportive), including for the meal. Anyone have a rough idea
what time the "party" is likely to break up for people to get back to London who need to? ( Not us, but I am trying to get an idea of times)
Raffle sounds good, if it is going to be in Oxford.
Thankyou so much for organising this event :-)

When & Where I will work out on one of my pre meeting visits.
What will probably happen is that at the bottom of the road that Blackwells is in the various places places in the road will be pointed out (eg
Newsagents, Oxfam, Tourist Office, Blackwells Book & Poster shops) and then we will separate into clusters of our own making. We will then gather
together for the next bit an hour later (or something like). |

official! Paulo and I are coming to London for the meetup!
I'm super excited (even wearing my deer stalker at the moment!) and can't wait to hug you again and finally see the city properly! YAY! \o/ |

Pitt Rivers and Natural History Museum both have a small but beautiful (in Pitt Rivers' case: also weird & strange) selections of cards |

Sadly, Natural History Museum will be closed throughout 2013 so I am
not sure Pitt Rivers alone is worth the trip... |
