What does "Up" mean?

I've noticed a lot of users replying to tag posts and things with "Up" or "Up*". What does that mean?

If you "up" (e.g. in Tags), there will be lots of "mixups".

'up' is used by impatient members who put in a message with the one word 'up' so that the thread they want to be more active comes 'up' to the top of the listings and so draw attention to itself.

It is often put in by a member who is the last on the tag list and they want someone else to tag them.

upping is annoying, it gives a false impression of popularity of a tag, it disrupts the flow of thread as the next person often then tags the person who 'upped' and it may not have been their turn. 'up' causes confusion and is frowned on. It also seems to be the same members who 'up' all the time.

There used to be a discussion on 'up' but that seems to have gone in one of the many message database crashes, that is why the link above no longer exists.

The topic 'Promote your favourite disappearing tag' came out of the 'up' discussions.

Ah! Okay, I'm familiar with the concept... around here we use the term "bump." Thanks for the explanation!

Yes.

You can either add it as a 'favourites' or 'subscribe' to it.

Subscribing will always send you an email when someone has added a message to that thread so you can come and see what was said. Favourites is like a bookmark so you can click on it and be taken straight to the thread, no matter where it is.

You will find 'subscribe' and 'add to favourites' at the top of the thread.

Totally disagree and see nothing bad in upping :)

P.S. Next time please never express your opinion as everyone's opinion, ok? ;)

As a moderator :) I get lots of U2U's from members complaining about people who 'up' and asking me to tell the person to stop it. Members themselves complain in the tags and also send U2U's to people who 'up' asking them to stop,

I feel that the amount of complaints that we moderators have had on 'upping' over the last 15 months that this forum has been operating qualifies me to say that it is not a popular activity. I base my everyone's opinion on that.

To reiterate - the topic 'Promote your favourite disappearing tag' is the place to promote a slow/stalled tag.

ohioman... i have no idea what you said but guessing from you putting it in another language means that its some sort of insult. if you cant abide in rules and be civil with others, maybe you should excuse yourself from a group activity. We are all here to have some fun.

I have removed ohioman's message from the forum.

Calling moderators names, even if it isn't in English doesn't go down well.

I understand now..and i won't be upping a thread anymore.
But is it ok to up a thread if your the last one to be tagged ?
And then delete my own forlast message so the thread doesn't fill up too much.
Is that kinda thing ok?
With just editing a post (with adding stuff) it doesn't get higher on the list.

It's more acceptable to up if you're the last one than if it is someone else you could have tagged yourself instead. It's a good idea to delete the up message after you have been tagged.

God, I hate 'upping'. Especially when there is one user who ups like 15 different topics at one after one on the same time. Because then you have to get through all these 'wrong' topics since there is nothing new.

no

if the trading items are of insufficient interest to the members then the topic will sink down the list.

Mood: Figuring out what's next

[*] posted on 11-8-2007 at 07:37 PM

OK - I'm going to sound really dumb here, but I have to ask.
When I go to a tag topic, I go to the last post and tag the last person who posted. When I go to the topic and see that the last post consists of someone typing "up", does that mean that I tag that person, or the post before that one (since the person before that one had tagged someone else, while it doesn't seem like the "up" person is even participating).

I know I'm not understanding some key point here - please enlighten me. I've been skipping threads where the last post was "up", because I wasn't sure what to do.

Also, I noticed some person entered "plop". I suppose that's the same concept.

Thanks.

carolreader, I don't think it's a dumb question. When a person "ups" a thread, he does so only to get it to the first page in the hope that someone would get interested in that tag again. The "upper" should be skipped, because she isn't participating to the tag and doesn't send anything to the previous person (just causes confusion, in my opinion (if the upper isn't the last person in the thread)).

i have 'upped' several times and did not the confusion and frustration involved. Mostly i up and not tag as i do not have the items wished for. :(

The last time i read from the forum somewhere was 'up' is to get the thread up on today's post. I apologise and will not do it anymore. My apologies again;)

:o I didn't know it was not okay to up!
I saw many many postcrossers doing it so naturally, and without a doubt I thought it was supposed to be done to keep tags go on smoothly.

But it is also true that it causes confusions because a lot of people don't read the previous posts, and some postcrossers "up" really fast almost as to bully the person who wrote the previous post, or if I am the next one to be tagged in I OFFER tags and nobody tags me but people "up"s, I'd be kind of hurt because that would sound like "I dont want any of your cards, hurry up!" ;)

Now I know. I will not do it again! :)
