Cambridge International meeting - Saturday 5th April 2014

We're getting ambitious in the east of England!

The next meeting in this region will be on Saturday 5th April 2014, when the principal meeting will be in Cambridge, city of colleges and bicycles!

Provisional Programme

We will meet between 10.00 and 11.00 am at the Grafton Centre, a shopping centre/mall off Newmarket Road to the east of Cambridge City centre. Let's meet upstairs at the BHS cafe where there is plenty of space. The centre is served by escalators and stairs.

The Grafton Centre is about one mile/2 km east of the city centre. It is well served by buses from the various Park and Ride places. It is also well served by local buses. The railway station is a bit further out of the city. (As I am travelling from Felixstowe please don't expect me before about 10.30 am but I'll do my best to get there as early as possible!)

The Grafton Centre is a 15-minute walk into the centre of Cambridge. Please note: there are thousands of bicycles everywhere and you will need to be very careful where you walk.

There is a lovely Post Office behind the Grafton Centre in Napier Street, on the way towards the city centre. The Post Office is open until 1.00 pm on Saturdays. It has a good selection of local (and London) postcards at 25p each, as well as a huge selection of other postcards to suit almost every taste - filmstars, adverts etc etc.

After the initial meeting I suggest those who want to go sightseeing do so, from about 11.30 am. There are plenty of colleges to see from the streets. To visit the colleges there is normally an admission charge - and they are not cheap! For example, to visit King's College Chapel it will cost you £7.50 each. The Round Church (one of three in England) is currently hidden behind scaffolding so although you can go inside you won't want to take a photo of it! But don't forget your cameras!

If anyone wants to get together for a group lunch, let's meet at the Tourist Information Centre in Peas Hill at 12.30 pm. We will then find somewhere suitable for a light lunch.

In the afternoon, at 3 pm, let's meet up outside King's News in King's Parade (opposite King's College). Then we'll head off somewhere to get to the serious business of swapping postcards, writing and signing them, chatting etc. If there is sufficient interest, we can find somewhere suitable for a meal. The Park and Ride services finish around 8 pm.

There will be a free raffle in the afternoon for a set of postcards from a rather rare country - I'll keep the rest secret until the day.

There will also be a mini-meeting in Felixstowe on Sunday 6th April, 2014.

We have two potential guides in Cambridge: Artyom (tyomitch), who lives in the city, and Leo (Leo9Ely), who as you can guess lives a few miles outside Cambridge, who both know Cambridge well. I know the city fairly well too, so between us I'm sure we can show you much of the best of the city.

Cambridge is close to Stansted Airport and transport links are excellent.

What do you need to bring? and other useful information

The most important thing of all is that you are there!

A camera might be a good idea, so you can record who is there as well as the sights of the city.

If you have regular swappers and would like all at the meeting to sign these cards, bring some with you, or buy some in Cambridge (shopping ideas below). Similarly if you would like to bring some official cards for us all to sign then please bring them. However, please note that writing, addressing and signing cards is a time-consuming business so don't bring too many! Pre-addressed cards or labels would be preferred.

If you have some postcards from where you live and would like to exchange them with others then please bring them along. And if you have surplus, duplicate and unwanted cards, these may be exchanged as well. I personally have a large number to swap and give away.

Don't forget to bring money for your expenses. And if you have them bring stamps - please see the note below about the changes in postal rates! A pen and paper would be useful to, especially if you exchange addresses with other Postcrossers!

I have a few maps of Cambridge to hand out.

Good places to buy postcards in Cambridge are: the Post Office in Napier Street (behind the Grafton Centre, which I mentioned above). The Works in Fitzroy Street have a smallish selection - small cards are 3 for 50p, larger cards 3 for £1. W H Smith in Market Street have a larger selection at 20 or 25p each. There is a superb selection of postcards at King's News in King's Parade, opposite King's College; I believe they are 10 for £3.00. Regent News and Regent Convenience Store both in Regent Street have good stocks of postcards at 30/40p each. And the Tourist Information Centre in Peas Hill have a fairly good selection, but possibly a bit pricey. (Leo says they may do a slight discount on quantity!) If anyone wants postcards of Antarctica they are obtainable at the Scott Polar Museum in Lensfield Road (free entry). Individual cards cost 55p each or there are three sets of ten for £5 each.

IMPORTANT NEWS - POSTAGE RATES BEING INCREASED

STOP PRESS :baddevil: Royal Mail are increasing postage rates on March 31st:flaming:

1st class stamps will increase to 62p;
2nd class stamps will increase to 53p;
Mail weighing up to 20g for Europe will go up from 88p to 97p;
Postcards weighing not more than 10g for the Rest of the World will go up from 88p to 97p; for other mail weighing up to 20g mail for the Rest of the World will cost £1.28.

Please let me know if you are interested in joining us for any part of this weekend meeting!

I've put this in the calendar, but I can't confirm till nearer the time.
I know Cambridge well, as my eldest son studied there.
It is also a convenient rail journey from my home!

This includes the postage rate increases which were announced yesterday:flaming:

Thank you, Toucans! :-)

Just a "dumb" question regarding the meeting point: where exactly shall we meet? Even though I have been to Cambridge twice, I have never visited Grafton Centre and I do not know any of you (except for Leo9Ely who told me about this event but we've never met in person )...

Also, what cards shall I bring from the Netherlands? :)
