Being brand spanking new to PostXing, I might be the only person to find 'sent' and 'received' to be ambiguous.

There are lots of ways to read 'received', for example, including 'received from others' or 'my cards sent & received by others'.

And 'traveling', of course, could be either direction, or both.

May I suggest six mutually-exclusive, less-ambiguous counts?

OutBound Registered

OutBound Traveling

OutBound Expired

InBound Registered

InBound Traveling

InBound Expired

This is a magnificent thing you've done, Paulo.

Cheers,

People who speak other languages, and just learning English, might be confused about what "inbound" and "outbound" means.

Much of the fun with postcrossing is that one never knows where the postcards come from before they arrive. If you see a list of the postcards travelling to you, it wouldn't be a surprise anymore. Let's say that the list shows that a postcard was sent to you 15 days ago from Germany, for instance. Wouldn't you wonder when it would arrive, what it shows, what's written on it, etc, etc? In my opinion, it would be more annoying than interesting to see such a list because I would keep thinking about those things. And if a postcard was travelling to me, but never showed up and ended up in my expired list, it would just make me sad, especially if it's from a rare country. Let's say someone sent me a postcard from Greenland. I would rather not know that a postcard was sent to me from Greenland, because if it's lost in the mail, I wouldn't know and I couldn't get angry at the postal service that made it disappear! And if it had shown up, I would get a nice suprise and it would make my day when it arrived!

Good question.

Having spent >20 years selling things in English to folks for whom English is a 2nd-3rd-4th language, I've worked-out my own little test procedure.

I took 'outbound' into Arabic, Chinese, and Russian using Google, and cut'n'paste the (to me) unintelligible result into Babylon for translation back into English, and got:

A) issued

C) outbound

R) outgoing, departing

When I reversed the process, English-Babylon-Arabic-Google-English returned:

A) Travelling abroad

All in all, I think that the word 'outbound' travels well between languages & cultures and, more importantly, is unambiguous when it gets there.

When I see 'Sent' & Received', my inclination is to think that Received is as subset of Sent, and I do not know who sent to whom or who received what from whom.

Cheers,

It had never occurred to me that some people might find sent/received confusing. It was obvious to me from the start that it means cards I have sent and cards I have received. Mostly because I already know what cards I have sent and what cards I have received. So it's not new information. And also because the sent list includes the travelling cards.

:thumbup::thumbup:

I agree - I think Sent and Received is a lot simpler that all these other words. If people express to Postcrossing that they don't understand then Postcrossing could add "Items You" to the front of each list. I think inbound and outbound are much more confusing.

Inbound travelling would never show as we don't know what is coming to us/ Inbound expired are also never shown.

I don't have a problem with sent and received either, I think it is very clear.
It is "my" postcrossing account so they are my sent cards and my received cards.
Easy!

I very much agree with sent/received being clear. I never assumed they could mean anything else than cards I sent and cards I received.

I've made more progress on these new pages and I need feedback to start wrapping things up.

To test the new pages, just append /sent, /received and /traveling to your profile URL.

The traveling postcards have been separated from the /sent as proposed earlier. I think this makes sense and has several advantages. It's still possible to hide/show the expired postcards like before, although it doesn't remember the selection yet (to do).

The issue with the table width when columns were added/removed has been fixed. It should display an horizontal scrollbar when the selected columns don't fit in the table.

Several other performance optimizations have been worked on. There are several things that are cached after the first view of the page and that should make the page load much faster afterwards (eg: data is read from the browser cache and not from the server).

Now it's the time to look for all bugs, quirky behaviors and missing things :). Let me know!

On the travelling list, it says "from member", not "to member".

Looks great by the way!

It would be quite nice if it remembered how many cards to show per page.

I second that - 25 doesn't get me very far when I want to see my travelling cards. ;) It would be nice if I didn't have to change it every time I want to look at them.

@Norway_girl: I totally missed that! Should be fixed now.

@nyassa, @siobhan: Now it should memorize the table status (except the show/hide expired which is still to be done).

Thank you all!

I just noticed that on the page for traveling cards, the images don't load for me. Those red arrows keep going round and round in circles, but nothing else happens. It does work with the sent cards though.

Yes, the same happens to me. Sent and received both load images as expected.

Well spotted! The links on the Postcard IDs on the traveling postcards weren't working also. I've made some updates and it should be good now.

Looks nice! Only thing that I use now and that I miss in the new version, is the 'traveled' column in the 'sent' page. In the current version, I often sort the table by country to see if my postcard to a country is travelling longer than usual. In the new version there's no quick way to see that anymore (I'm not a very quick counter when I only see the dates).
I know I can also see average/median at the stats page, but when I do what I mentioned above, I am mostly searching for the postcards that traveled the longest to a country.
It will also be harder to compare because traveling and sent are no longer on the same page. But I understand that making different pages has many advantages for other reasons.
Although it took me some words to explain, I know it is a minor problem ;)

Zertz: If you click at "Show/hide columns", you can tick "traveled" to see how many days the postcards have travelled. :)

Ah, perfect! Thanks for your answer! Didn't notice that! Than it is only a little bit harder because traveling and sent are no longer in the same list, but I can write the current travelling times down to compare! I see there are lot more good reasons to split it than to keep it the way it is ;)

the new pages look great!

Also one thing that's quite annoyed me many times on the old page:
I sort by country
I scroll down to whereever I need to be (sometimes that's a bit of scrolling LOL)
I click on a card/member/etc. in the list
Go backpage....
and the "sort by country" is no longer...so you have to scroll back up, sort it again, scroll back down.
If this could be fixed in the new feature that would be quite nice!

@kugush: no more need to sort by country and then scroll down in the new tables. If you just enter the name of the country in the search box on top, it will show you only the postcards that are from/to that country. You can then sort by anything else you want.

About your main point, it already keeps the information, so if you go away and come back, your settings will still be the same. Give it a try! :)
