NYC Meetup - June 21, 2014 (EVENT PHOTOS ADDED!)
NYC Meetup - June 21, 2014
Postcrossing Meet-up for NYC area Postcrossers
COUNTRY: USA
CITY/REGION: NYC / Tri-State Area
DATE: Saturday, June 21, 2014
TIME: 11am - 4pm
LOCATION: UN Visitor Centre, 43rd St at 1st Avenue.
It looks as though we have enough interest to hold a NYC meet-up on Saturday, June 21st. We'll kick-off the meeting with a stop at the UN Visitor
Centre for postcards, special UN stamps and a mailing opportunity. From there we can do additional shopping, have lunch and sign meet-up cards etc.
Important note... there are NO guided tours of the UN on the weekend. Only the Visitor Centre is open. So we're there exclusively to shop for cards
and stamps. We won't be able to actually visit the UN proper... just the Visitor Centre.
Also, please note: we will need to go through their security process to enter the Visitor Centre. So remember your IDs and leave your metal objects at
home .
Rough agenda:
11 am - 11:15 am: Meet up at the park directly across the street from the UN Visitor Centre (43rd and 1st Ave - a few long blocks east of Grand
Central Station)
11:30 am - 12:30 pm: Browse / Shop for postcards and stamps at the UN Visitor Centre. Mail out any UN stamped cards.
1 pm: Lunch at a nearby, informal and modestly priced restaurant (options to come) and talk postcards.
2 pm -4 pm: Shop for more cards (Times Square or Empire State Bldg area?) and then group sign meet-up cards for those who bring them.
How does that sound?
Please u2u me or post your interest in attending this meet-up in this thread so we have a rough idea who's coming.
More details to come...

Great! Look forward to seeing both of you. We have a few other people who are attending as well, so it should be a good crew.
I'll be back with additional details soon!

UN postal stationery changes
FYI:
http://linns.com/news/international-stamps/505/UN-stationery-surcha...
The United Nations Postal Administration will issue surcharged versions of U.N./New York postal stationery June 6 to meet new United States Postal
Service rates that went into effect earlier this year, on Jan. 26.
A 3¢ surcharge was added to the 46¢ standard (No. 6¾) and large-size (No. 10) Circle and Dots envelopes (Scott U34-U35) to meet the 49¢ domestic rate.
For the new $1.15 international letter rate, a 5¢ surcharge was added to the $1.10 Circle and Dots air letter sheet (Scott UC31). The original
envelopes and air letter sheet were issued March 5, 2013.

Thanks for the info, IkeyPikey...
Interestingly enough, they don't mention a "surcharge" for the domestic postcard rate.
Do you think we'll actually have to pay a full 34 cents to send a postcard from the UN?
Yikes... I guess we better call the whole thing off??

It will be so much fun finally meeting you, too! Yay! This is def going to be a fun crew (though Malicia emailed that she wasn't going to be able to
make it - family coming in. Bleh!) But it'll be a hoot anyway.

Hi there,
Anybody willing to swap a meeting card from your meet (signed by all, etc) to add to my meet collection, for one of either Montreal (where I live) or
for one of an upcoming meet I'll be attending in Toronto (in July)?
If someone is interested in doing this, I would greatly appreciate it.
Let me know!

Great Ladybug! I'm working on printing a meet-up card to send out, too.
Hope you can make it KelseyHannah! The more the merrier!

Good to hear! And yes, potential new recruits are always welcome to join us. In fact, Ladybug513 brings her non-Postcrossing husband and he ends up
being one of the coolest dude there!
Looking forward to meeting all of you. And just a reminder; it's never too early to commence the good weather prayers!

I wish I could come! It sounds like fun.
My daughter and I were just at the UN to send a bunch of officials out. Just a word of warning. The postcards at the UN are $.85/each. We didn't
have a lot of time, so we didn't shop around for packs or a discount. We did notice as we walked through Manhattan that you can easily find cards
15/$1.00. We finally saw one shop that offered 30/$1.00. We bought 30

Meh, a small price to pay for world peace, no?!
Thanks for the heads up, Jeff! You'll have to try and join us next time.
It's getting nuts out there!! I've seen more and more places (in less competitive markets) now trying to get as much as a buck a card. Ouch!
Which is why it might be worthwhile to bring some of our own postcards into the UN... and just purchase the one-of-a-kind postage stamps there.
Something to consider, though it should be fun seeing what cards and discount packs they offer.
Okay... the adventure awaits us. Less than a week away.

Great! It'll be fun meeting you, lycheee - and these meetups provide a terrific opportunity for newer members to get some tips and ask questions
about the hobby. And see how nuts we all are as, well!
Okay, at this point, we have about a dozen people saying yes to the meet up - as well as a few maybes. Good sized group...
Now is a the time to think about what you might want to accomplish at this meetup. Put together a list of any people you want to send cards to from
the UN. (Remember, you have to send any cards that have special UN stamps from the UN postbox... they aren't accepted if left in a regular US
mailbox)
Also, if you have a lot of cards you want to send out, consider printing a sheet of address labels ahead of time. Saves time having to look up each
address...
Bring some pens, any US postage if you plan to send out regular cards from the meetup, spending money and good walking shoes!
I'll post some other meet-up details later on... but for now, just get ready for some fun!

Rocky,
Unfortunately I couldn't make the Metropolitan Postcard Club this past weekend but I don't plan to miss the meet-up. As a matter of fact I had to
cancel another engagement for this. Can't wait! |

Yes, I ended up missing a train into the city so had to forgo the Metro Postcard Club show as well. We'll have to make sure we catch the next one!
Very excited about Saturday's meetup, too! Looks like the weather's going to co-operate.

UPDATE:
For security reasons, it's best if we gather our group in the small park directly across from the UN Visitor's Centre rather than on the sidewalk.
It's called Ralph Bunche Park... and you can't miss it. Two large crosswalks lead across 1st Avenue to it. The park features a big stairwell and
granite wall with inscriptions. Also a steel pylon sculpture. Pretty place and good spot to mingle as we wait for everyone to show up. It's right
across the street from the entrance we'll be using.
Here's a map of the site:

I've u2u'd you all some additional notes about the meeting including security procedures for getting into the UN,etc. Please shout back here or in a
u2u if you have any questions or concerns about the meetup.
Looking forward to meeting up with all of you and taking part in this unique postal adventure!
