I've learned that you actually have to "train" them and that involves positive re-enforcement. (Reward the pets when they're good!)

I have my wife and niece nicely "trained". My wife, for instance, just brought me back several cards from a weekend girls trip to Cozumel... and my niece from a recent business trip to Pittsburgh. I'm working on the rest of the family. But it can be done!

Find out what they want - and then condition its delivery after card acquisitions they make for you. Once you've ingrained this behavior in them, you'll eventually find they'll see the fun in it themselves - and just start bringing you postcards for the challenge of it all!
