I would like to be able to search for cards by tags, too, but I would probably be too lazy to tag my own cards. :D

Waiting for good news about tags on postcards. Would be easier to choose the right card to send to the members. Thank you !

You can use the search users function to find cards from what you look for:D

Yes, but if there was a designated field for keywords/tagging, people would probably use it more often and it would become much easier to find stuff. For example I never put the name/breed of an animal in the description, but if there was a field for a keyword I would fill it in.

No point in monthly bumping the topic.

The Postcrossing Team have read the discussion and it is on the suggestions list.

Whether it gets implemented or not, is not dependent on being bumped monthly or how many members +1 etc.

The suggestion is noted.

I'm not just bumping this topic, I'm hoping this is still somewhere in the pipeline and could be promoted up the list a little further.

I'm bringing it up again because postcards are increasingly bought online though various channels: Amazon, ebay, specialist postcard sellers.

Of course, there are various themes which are always international, reproductions of art for example.

It's no longer enough to check for duplicates by filtering your own country but without tags there is little else you can do. I know it relies on people using tags correctly but I'd still love it to be done.

Likewise. For example, I like Alfonse Mucha cards but I took them off my wishlist because I was getting too many double ups and as they don't just come from one particular country, it's too much to expect people to check every card, especially when you have as many as I do.

I am really looking forward to this suggestion being implemented.

Photo TAGS

Please allow us to use tags in order to find/group the postcards we love.
Firstly everyone could add a tag and on the way, the others could use it *(the system could suggest it when typing let's say the first letter)

later edit :inline:
Alternative method
As I was writing here, could there be a possibility to group favs in albums to facilitate the search for those about to send you a postcard and who want so see what you prefer.

Maybe adding tags is difficult to implement, bute there are already comments and description fields in the postcard pages.

Would it be possible to allow Google to index the postcard pages, so that we can search for words that may appear in the comments or description of the cards?
Apparently the current robots.txt file allows google to index the users but not the postcards themselves. I would prefer the reverse!

Else, do you know of another search engine which does index the postcard pages? Apparently Baidu does it, but it's less easy to use than Google for people who don't read Chinese.

I didn't see this topic already posted... and posted my own thread! (ooooops)

I have been hoping for some sort of tagging ability for the gallery since I signed up! Sounds like others are also interested, but for some reason or another the webmasters/etc have not responded.

More donations required, perhaps? ;)

Nothing to do with 'more donations'.

Donating or not does not affect the features offered to all members. Everyone is equal.

The Postcrossing Team have read the discussion and it is on the suggestions list.

Rather than just saying "like" or "dislike" i will try to write up some of the thoughts:

Just having random strings as tags can create some chaos, confusion, and possibly hurt feelings. For example, how would somebody feel to have #stupid put on their self-made card or #unwanted on a card that is a bit risque that was sent to a person in hopes that it will be "just right" for that person.

I think that doing something like "community approved" tags, something along the lines of Stackexchange sites would also be a bad idea, even if a lot of people on this forum will disagree. The problem is exactly that, most people on Postcrossing are not on the Postcrossing forum, many do not want to sit and talk online, and that is exactly why they got themselves a hobby of Postcrossing. I doubt that such people would want to participate in a multiday (or maybe even multiweek) discussion about whether #night should be for the cards of the night view or for the symbolic representation of night.

Now, the problem is that there are problems with Postcrossing team coming up and maintaining the list of the tags. This would be an enormous task, or people would quickly start asking "Why did you implement it if you are not looking after it?" This would also open Postcrossing to some legal attacks. Let's say Postcrossing team would add #atheism or #stopreligion tag, it sounds innocent, except that it will be grounds for the site to be blocked in Saudi Arabia and probably even Russia (a country with the leading number of users). The defence along the lines of "but we didn't support it, it was the user's choice to post such a card" wouldn't even work any longer (although Russia doesn't seem to care about such defences anyhow... but still).

some of these are good points. but I think these can be mitigated by providing preset list tags, or suggest tags, or even moderating tags (even crowd-moderating). but overall postcrossing is generally a positive crowd, I really doubt this will be an issue. they could even allow tagging for users with certain number of cards sent/received, which should filter out most people with negative attitudes.

Recently I draw several great members, they are wholehearted of sending/receiving great cards.

I really want to send some cards to enrich their collections and I feel great too:D
But some of them do not have online album to organize items...

Like if someone collecting moomin/royal family/harrypotter etc.. without an album.... I have to go through thousands of received cards (because they can be sent from every country)

And sometimes, people have 2 or more accounts written in profile and asked sender to check other accounts avoid duplicating. It is a number of over thousands or ten thousands cards:barfy:

End up with a local viewcard ("if you do not have anything matching the wishes") not duplicated in "Wall>Received>Hong Kong".

You do NOT have to check for duplication.

Postcrossing is not a collectors website. Don't waste your time about checking.

Annual bump ;)

- I know that postcrossing's wonderful team has 'tags' on its long list, and it will be done when it can/will be done - still, with more than 10k cards registered every day, the 'situation' grows bigger daily.
That's why I want to encourage and motivate the team again. For some users (like me), 'tags' would add an extra spoon of joy into the marvellous sundae called postcrossing.

- I know that I don't have to fulfill wishes/requests. It just happens that I like to when possible.

- I think that any future list of tags should contain only tags given by the team ... some general ones like animals, tourist, unesco, a few specific ones like nightview, black/white, vintage ... .
Maybe (big maybe) users should/could be allowed to have some limited tags on their own which they could refer to in their profile, like 'I really love topicX, you can check the cards I've received already with #topicX'.
I think tags should to be only positive, negative words like #unwanted or #ugly should be forbidden.

- If it's a problem of ressources/money (yes, I've read that it's not), maybe a short funding-campaign could help. I know at least one user who would chip in some extra-€

- I acknowledge there are some small dangers like tags giving users the impression they have to 'obey' requests more than they have now already, or tags starting some weird competition or some spiteful discussions; on the other side, I truely believe that the positive spirit I am glad experience here every day won't be defeated by some simple tags ...

- can't emphasize enough that I appreciate all efforts postcrossing's powerteam takes ... don't wanna annoy or stress you. Only encourage ...

(and another 500 cards added while I was trying to find my words ;))
